Have just fitted a new water pump to the Mini bought from The Mini Shop stall at Brooklands for £14. This was the 1275 type with the blanked off bypass hole that is needed for the 850 / 1000cc engines.
I had a spare 850 / 1000cc type in the shed and had fitted the bypass outlet with a short length of sealed off rad hose, but this was still too bulky and may have leaked in the future under normal engine temperature, pressure and vibration conditions.
The
'All Knowing' Dai suggested drilling and tapping the outlet pipe and fitting a bolt wrapped in PTFE thread tape to give a more permanent and reliable solution.
So armed with a Zeus table book and a knowledgeable mate in work (Alan) I firstly cut off the outlet pipe flush to the water pump body then drilled out the hole left with a 8.75mm drill (tapping size) then using a 1/8" BSP tap, cut a thread inside the hole.
Then using a 1/8" BSP tapered plug covered in blue Loctite threadlock gunge sealed up the hole.
The result is that I now have a reliable 'spare' water pump for a 1275 type engine with no bypass outlet pipe. So its back in the shed as a good spare.
Only one thing to watch out for if you are doing this is that the 'plug' must not intrude into the water pump inlet pipe as it may impede the water flow to the pump.
Hope this helps
