If you want to get rid of the points problems altogether Sooty you could always fit a Luminition Magnetronic set up which replaces the points so doing away with all the contact setting and wear problems Think Dai Lemma saw one go on eBay last week for about £45 I have fitted one on my old Mini 30 which gave me no further problems and I've just bought a set for the MGB, but not fitted it yet! jc

MORE HELP NEEDED ....PLEASE...!!!!!! that hunk of junk I have the cheek to call a car is sick again......thought it was the same problem as last time but its not....and no nearer to sorting her...... she was running fine till last friday, when she started missing ....reset the points gap as they were out a bit (again) but it didnt work.....then she refused to start again....it seemed like the battery was low, but i know it wasnt shes turning over but not very fast....tried byrons starter on her but it didnt work at all....(thought they looked the same...)tried jumping her and still nothing....tried bumping her on tow and she`ll start but is blowing and doesnt sound well at all....the blowing seems to be coming from the air filter? .... any ideas on what it could be.....

Darn car. Is it gettng fuel JU..?? Pull the plugs out, check to see if They're wet with petrol. Gap the plugs to 25 thou. Has the distributor clamp come loose and allowed the timing to go out. Sounds a bit like the timing is out to be blowing back through the carb.

dizzy is fine....solid and not moved.....and its not to do with the leki bits ive just put in cause its just the same as before....
will redo the plugs...but they dont seem wet (got a slight wiff of petrol on them)....but there is fuel going into the carb.....it sounds odd when trying to turn it over....like the starter dosnt have enough power going to it.....its weird
my lcb is split but i think its patched for now....but the noise thats comming from the air filter isnt like a backfire....just like an exhaust blowing noise

If it was a dodgey earth I think that the jump starting would cure it, and once started should run OK - having said that there is no harm at all in rechecking the battery terminals and engine earth strap connections Sounds like timing as Dai Lemma says. Are you sure you don't have to alter the timing after you fit the lekytronic ignition ? jc

i think the timing may need tweeking a bit...but it was like this before fitting the leki bits....so i know its not the fault of the new part.....
she ran when she was bumped, and didnt run too bad....no probs with revs ect......just this blowing noise......ive checked the manifold and exhaust, its not the best as its still got the de-cat pipe in it but cant find any blowing now....
will double check the earth...fingers crosses

checked the earths and all ok....but.....the positive terminal on the battery seems to be getting hot....is that right???...i thought they stayed cool but this is melting through some insulation tape that was lurking on it

If its getting hot then its a bad connection or its loose, either way you should be able to cure it by cleaning it up with some emery paper or wire wool and tightening the clamp terminal jc

i,ve had a similar problem with cable getting hot in the past. from what i remember it was shorting out around the y piece area and it look like someones has had the same problem with buttons at some time as there is a lot of electrical tape around the cable by the y piece.

was under the car on monday and no probs with the cable near the exhaust.....was thinking of changing it anyway...just to make sure theres no break in the wire.....
cleaned up the terminals yesterday so i know they are clean

Have you got a decent rubber grommet where the cable goes through the boot floor.??

yep....nice thick one with no breaks in it.....
would a dodgy starter make it hot?

You could try tracing the battery cable all the way from the battery to the starter motor terminal to see if there is any damage or broken insulation that may be shorting out to the car bodywork jc

Hi Ju If you don't find anything obvious with the battery cable it is possible that the starter motor may be causing a short circuit - do you know of another one close by that you could swap it with just to prove the point ;D ;D jc

i did swap it with byrons starter....but it spun over once then failed to go again.....so put the original one back on....i`m not sure if his one (off a 998) was ok for mine (1275) but it looked the same....lol....
