Hi Folks,
Done a few miles lately and have been pushing the engine quite hard, really enjoying the power....
However on a few occasions I have parked up and turned the engine off only for it to run on for a couple of seconds.....
What's the cause? More importantly what's the cure? This is the point where I do not want to hear any "costly repair" replies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stuart

Hi Stuart Can you take a pic of it running over so that we can have a better idea!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D Have you touched the carb mixture lately What colour are your spark plugs if you pull one out Running on can sometimes be a case of mixture being too rich Hope this helps Looking forwards to some pics!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D jc

What's the compression ratio of your motor Stuart.?? Too high a CR with todays cr*p fuels would cause the engine to run on. The timing may be slightly too advaced. Does it "PINK" under acceleration.

Right, here we go.... sorry JC my camera appears to broken, especially when you ask for photo's...once bitten!!!!! I'm not falling for that one!! Try harder! Seriously, haven't touched the carbs or the set up, nothing appears to be detached, did however have to put standard unleaded in instead of my usual super unleaded/vmax of preference, so next tank will be of the higher ron fuel, plus I'm ordering some Millers VSP, I used this in my Elans up to a couple of years ago it's a lead replacement plus an octane booster, so it should do the trick! The compression is higher than normal following the rebuild, so that's most likely the answer....will let you know, Thank you for your prompt and helpful answers..... JC, here's something for you, I love this shot of the detail of the Works Lamp bar and wiring socket..enjoy!! Stuart

Great pic Stuart, not sure about that deformed person in the chrome reflection though ;D ;D ;D Sounds like your lack of lead replacement concoction might be the answer then jc

Done a bit more research Stuart. Some other possibilities. Carbs maladjusted. (JC MG) Excessive carbon build up. Cylinder head or Plugs. Hardly likely. Overheating.

JC, thats a true image, I always look like that, my feelings are sooooo hurt..I may never step outside the front door again!
Dai, thanks again, I've jut cured my overheating with the new radiator and bottle of Redline Water Wetter...so doubt if its that, engine only got around 3k miles on it since the build so excess carbon shouldn't be an issue...carbs were checked by Jamie at J&L in March so again shouldn't be out..
Cheers
Stuart

Could still be the carbs Stuart, twins are notorious for drifting. Took the twin 1.5" carbs off mine and replaced them with a single HIF44 - once set up can be forgotten about! May be worth checking the carb balance again though jc

I wasn't suggesting that Stuart should do that Dai Lemma, just saying what I had done on mine is all Think he should check the balance of the twins on his though jc

JC, Will do, might take it up to Willfords and let Tommy put it on the rolling road again it's been over a year since he last had it on the rollers and he's great with SU's, unless you want to bump me to the top of that long queue of people who appear to be courting your assistance on the other thread!!! And why were you posting at an unearthly hour this morning? Stuart

And why were you posting at an unearthly hour this morning? Stuart ;D ;D ;D Was up early cos I decided at the last minute to go to Beaulieu today for the MCR Mini Cooper Day, not long got back - bought lots of bits for the MG!!!!!!! ;D Think your best bet with the carbs is the rolling road and especially if the guy is good with SU's ! I used to tweek a bit but was never sure if what I was tweeking was making things better or worse - thats another reason I decided to swap to a single HIF44 I do have a Gunsons Carb balancing kit here somewhere but never got round to using it in anger!!! With an 'S' like yours though Stuart it deserves to be sorted for tuning / rolling road at least once a year to get the best out of what is already an incredibly gorgeous Mini! Cheque book is burning a hole in my pocket again!!!!!! ;D jc

Ta JC, must have been a great day at Beaulieu given the weather....filled both tanks up today with 99 ron today and to me the difference was instant, now that may just be in my mind, but certainly felt like more power and no sign of the engine running on. Rolling road in a week or two , also the water wetter plus the new super cool radiator and water pump appear to have cured my overheating concerns. Now just got to replace the silver wheel arch trim that flew off the other day..an evening in the garage with the hairdryer soon! So how many noughts will be to the left of the decimal point is on that cheque with my name on it? ? Stuart
