Hmm just when I thought all was going well after fitting a Supercool MiniSport radiator and new water pump plus the Redline Water Wetter I was out on Tuesday for an hour or so and could not keep the temperature down when stuck in traffic. OK it was in the mid 20's and the sun was blazing but the panic was on as the needle edged toward the H as I was stuck in queues. So..... I now the lamps will have restricted air flow to the front so I think it's an electric fan next for me, Any recommendations? I am thinking about a sensor operated unit with an override switch, so what make? Kenlow, Revotec? Any help and a pointers for the best place to buy and also a hand fitting it wouldn't go amiss, my funds are low so a visit to my favourite mechanic in Cardiff at £45 + vat an hour are out of the question for the time-being!! Cheers Stuart

Stuart You are welcome to come have a look at jc as he's got one fitted as standard from new inside the nearside wheel arch. It used to run from a temp sensor fitted in the thermostat housing untill I hit it with a spanner one day and it disintegrated!!!!! After that I wired it up to a switch on the dash to make it manually operated whenever I see the temp rising a bit too high! I have a Spal fan here that possibly could be used but I don't have any brackets for it so they would have to be manufactured and fitted. Hope this helps a bit jc

Thank you gents, I assume these units are "suckers" rather than blowers as there seems to be 2 types, as far as being "in period" with the age of the car, I'm in the "sod the period parts" when it comes to frying a very precious original block and head!!! I am not melting that engine for the sake of £100 or so!
JC, I'd love to pop down some time as long as you promise not to kidnap PPN. In fact I might bring a scrubbing brush and a bucket and you can attack my not yet cleaned back seat and upholstery!!!
Phil, Thanks for the offer, out of preference I think I'll go down the Kenlowe route they worked well on my Elans but will keep it in mind if that's ok.
Taffy, Thanks for the link!
Keep your thoughts and tips coming folks!
Stuart

Darn it. I thought that all those new bits would have cured your Heating problem. I agree totally with you with regards to "sod the period parts bit". Those pesky S motors are too rare to ignore overheating problems. I turn the cabin heater on full blast if the temp gauge starts to raise a bit. Better having dehydration and a scorched foot than a cooked motor.

Dai,
Now you've got me thinking, the heater is not connected, the cable not being replaced during the rebuild.....I'll try opening the valve with some grips and pray that the heater matrix is sound it all appears to be connected up..think I'm resigend to the kenlowe route...
Just noticed that I have an 11? Blade plastic fan, obviously not original, how efficient is this type of fan?

Got a 6 blade metal fan on jc Stuart and, (when its running ! ), I don't have any overheating problems, but maybe thats nothing to do with the type of fan fitted jc

The 11 blade plastic fan would be standard fitment for the age of the car Stuart. They are in fact very efficient, in some cases, over efficient. I used to chop the ends off mine because they were too good. Minispares do a 4 bladed fan set up.(2+2), but they are noisy and sap power. If it keeps the motah cool, It's worth the sacrifice.

Thanks Dai, this article is what I used as my starting point when PPN frst started to overheat, so I've now read it again and still think the kenlowe is the way forward, especially as it's hidden in the wing andI can hav a manual overide...
Cheers

Would a sticking thermostat be causing your problems? I'd get that heater plumbed in and then if it doesn't blow hot it could mean the thermostat isn't opening.
