the strip down is rather simple, rough order
1) remove head 2) remove clutch/ flywheel 3) remove transfer gear case 4) remove oil pump 5) remove timing chain cover 6) remove timing chain 7) remove cam 8) split box from block 9) disconect conrods 10) remove crank 11) remove pistons
rebuilding is the reverse, but you will have to check tolarances etc

I learnt how to rip an engine apart by reading the haynes book of lies, which incidentally, Isn't full of lies. After a few strip and rebuilds the manual was chucked away. Only the Torque settings and end floats etc need to be checked thoroughly because I'm no good with Numbers.

i was taught whilst working for rover, but still need to refer to the book of lies from time to time. wont touch gearboxes though.

few pics of my build, sadly i got no in depth pics start with freshly bored block then refit pistons on to con rods and intall refit crank ( checking end float) mine has a centre main strap bolt on box and head fit flywheel buy a better cam then fit along with duplex chain then fit back in to mini ;D ;D ;D ;D

First trick to learn is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Don't lose any nuts n bolts. Get lots of plastic bags and bag the nuts n bolts for each specific item you pull off. IE. Cylinder head. Water pump. Flywheel cover. etc etc. After a few rebuilds You'll get to know your nuts n bolts and will know instinctively where they go on an engine.

also try get hold of a back copy of "mini expert" by keith claver(sp?) its a very good read and goes in to alot of detail

lots of bags and labels first on the shopping list then ;D Next question, what new parts should i think about getting on order? It's a cooper 1275 engine, Will be happy to keep it standard spec unless there are obvious things that will improve reliability without increasing costs new clutch, oil pump and cam followers and of course a complete gasket set. you may aswell get a slightly hotter cam now whilst the engine is apart, it saves stripping it again if you decide on one later on.

That depends if you've driven the car with that engine in,You'll know then whether it uses oil, leaks oil, rattles, overheats, crunches gears, clutch slips, missfires, leaks water, jumps out of gear, Won't start, Won't stop. And so the list goes on. Bit tricky really to say what parts are required until It's been tried on the road.
