i`m after your brain cells again....
sooty has been ill lately....traced it to the head gasket , which had obviously blown just by the coil....and not obvioulsy blown between cyls 2-3 and 3-4....the rest was ok...lol....
before we did the head gasket she was sorta blowing from what sounded like the carb.....so thought it was the lcb....
changed the head gasket, put new (to me ) lcb. new manifold gaskets, ect and started her up....she went fine with a booster pack....and seemed to run ok BUT....
shes still got that noise from by the carb, it actually sounds like a blowing exhaust or manifold but its definatly sealed fine.shes fine ticking over but as soon as you give her some welly shes blowing......any ideas anybody...!!!!!!!!!!

Is the exhaust/downpipe being held securely by the securing bracket that attaches at the rear/side of the gearbox?
You'll have problems if the bolt is loose or missing.

yep...the exhaust pipe is on fine.... probably no oil in the dash pot as its loosing oil from there by the day...topped it up yesterday but most prob its empty as for timing....she seems fine unless you rev her...lol...when the timing was out last time it didnt sound anything near to this...its a real blow...not a backfire

Would a dodgy valve or something in the engine/head make such a noise???
we tried to get her up on ramps earlier and she was having none of it....either died or was just too loud and i thought if i push her i`d end up breaking her even more

A burnt valve seat would cause the car to missfire. I'm thinking along the lines that maybe, just maybe you may have a sticking inlet valve and because it isn't closing properly when that piston is on it's compression stroke all the unburnt fuel is forcing it's way back up the head and inlet manifold back through the carb. Have you done a compression test yet.?? Pound to a penny that'll tell you which valve it is and the other way is to check to see if all the inlet valves are closed when they shoud be.

she had blown through 3-2 and 3-4...not sure how long she had been blown there though, we only noticed it blowing by the coil. she seems to be pushing a lot out of the exhaust at the back as well....so much its blowing my hand away

no...still the same carb...thats drinking dash pot oil..... shes still a bit iffy starting....but does go with a booster pack (flatish battery)....checked the plugs earlier after a bout of not starting and the plugs seemed dry....left her for a minute and tried again and away she went

After an afternoon trying to persuade ol`sooty to run....shes still ill we took the rocker cover off and started her up.....all seems to be working fine....rechecked the valve clearances and they are good put another carb on her and adjusted the dizzy....still doing exactly the same.....blowing like hell out of the carb, i put a mirror behind the carb and could see it blowing petrol out when revved...was ok on tickover but only when the choke is out, she wont tick over without the choke argggggg....any ideas on what to try next???...

Not every carb you've tried has got a fault with it, surely. So it's got to be something else. Let's try the simple things 1st. Are the plug leads on correctly, ie, 1.3.4.2., firing order.?

firing order fine dai....
its still the original problem from before the head gasket went....it was making this noise for a few days before the gasket blow was visibly noticeable...i thought it was my leaky manifold but as you know thats changed now and it is definitely blowing from the carb....and got a load of pressure coming out of the exhaust

When you had the head off did all the valves look ok.? Did any of them look to be burnt or blackened on their edges.? I'm still thinking that there may be a dicky inlet valve in there somewhere. Did you do a compression test on all the cylinders.??

havent done a compression test as no tester yet...working on it though....
byron cleaned up the head and it wasnt too bad
i have got another head here and gasket so may pop it on and look for some different noises....bet it wont cure the problem though.....process of elimination i suppose
