Not my strong point i'm afraid. Sounds like a faulty temp transmitter. There's a thread on here somewhere about leccy fans.

Most likely fault would be the sensor - took mine off years ago and threw it away! - I have wired the fan directly to a switch on the dash - hardly ever used mine but once you see the temp rising you can switch it on if need be! Not sure about the injection wiring as to if you could do that without upsetting that stupid ECU but can't see it being a problem The way to see if its the sensor or the fan would be to remove the connector from the sensor while the engine is running and using a shorting piece of wire 'short' out the 2 terminals - if the fan is OK it should run - if nothing happens then it may be a faulty fan. Hope that helps Brace! jc

if i put a switch on do i just basically run a wire from one connector to a switch then back to the other connector(the ones that go to the original switch)?

An SPi Mini (& all post 1992 1275 carb models) with have the fan switch located at the lower front of the radiator. It helps if you remove the grille to get at it.
So just remove the 2 spade connector terminals off it, connect them together with a paper clip and then switch on the ignition.
The auxiliary cooling fan should then come to life.
If it doesn't then I'd check the in-line fuse that's located behind the air filter box.
It'll be the one with the blue/red wire and the 15amp fuse.
In-Line Fuses situated behind air-filter on the bulkhead: -
15amp - Purple/Orange Wire Hazard Warning & Interior Lamps
15amp - Brown/Orange Wire Dim-Dip Lighting
10amp - Blue/Orange Wire Rear Fog Guard Lamps
15amp - Blue/Red Wire Auxiliary Cooling Fan (where fitted)

What the switch that's fitted at the lower/front of the radiator?
Did you have to drain the coolant first?

I see thanks Phil, my sisters old 1992 British Open Classic LE had the same type of auxiliary cooling fan set-up, but that had an hif38 carb.

i pulled the switch out.its only held by a plastic retaining clip.turn it anti clock wise and just pull it out.the coolant just poured out of it anyway cos its at bottom of the rad.there's a rubber around the switch and i found it easier to push rubber seal in first then the switch into that.if you try putting the rubber on switch and push them in together its a real tight fit.its only 5 mins when you got the grill off first
