Have finished putting my engine in today and gave it the grand firing up. It turns over well to my relief, but isnt getting any fuel. Realised it didnt have any fuel in the tank so put 5 litres in and tried again, not starting, took the fuel in pipe off the carb and tried no fuel coming through. Took the fuel pipe off the filter and tried, still nothing!! The fuel pump hasnt been touched so I wouldn't have thought (hope it isnt) that.... Any other idea's?

It was, although it had petrol in there before it had the heart transplant must have evaporated! How do I prime the carb?

id rather put petrol down into the carb than all over the exhaust manifold! mind you i guess your way will tell if the pumps knackered?

I took the tank out of its bracket so that it was sitting in the middle of the spare wheel well. Fuel is now pumping all the way through to the carb fuel in pipe.
Connected the pipe back on and tried to fire it up again and theres a pop which sounds like a "PFFFFFFFPH" and then smoke comes from the air filter side of the carb!!!
Now thats the problem?

Exactly how it is on the car. I've taken the filter off and pulled the damper out, using it to lift the piston up and loads more smoke came out!!

It seemed like there was no petrol in the tank at first, but I put 5 litres in and a lot leaked out which I had to waste, but the tank is still really full! Maybe it wouldnt start cuz it was trying to pump the fuel uphill Lazy fuel pump!!!! ;D

I've gone as far as I can on my own I think, I need a bit of help to get him going. Everything is bolted on, its got oil and water, although the carb hasnt been wired in yet (throttle and choke cables).
You can read above what happened today when I tried to start it, not good!
So if there is anyone local who can help me? Please! I'll give you a bit towards petrol and labour, there'll be tea on tap and a tin on biccies to munch through!

After following the excellent guide that Rob so kindly typed up on MSN last night for me. I still cant get the little bugger going! I took the pipe off the carb where the fuel goes in, cranked it with the key and short bursts of fuel spurted out into the bottle i had placed to catch the fuel. Fuel pumping... CHECK. I took the coil HT lead off and held it a close to the head, cranked it over with the key and it sparked. It was yellow in colour and didnt seem that strong. Coil power supply... UNSURE. I took the HT lead off plug 1 and held it close to the head again and cranked it over with the key, couldn't hear or see anything whereas on my 998 the spark could be seen and heard clearly. I put some foil in the end of the HT lead and tried again, had a yellow very weak spark. Dizzy power supply ... UNSURE. Following Rob's advice, I have taken some pictures of how it is all sitting right now : I used a yogurt pot to hold the choke open slightly as I can't attach the wire yet.

on the picture you have marked that the rockers above cylinder 4 are rocking but the ones above cylinder 1 aren moving this could be caused by the tapets not being correctly set has the head been off and pushrods out this could be the reason for this the dizzy def looks wrong as a ball park setting remove the spark plug on number 1 cylinder and rocker cover slowly turn the engine over by hand not by the key until the piston in cyl 1 is at the top sometimes a short screwdriver put inside can indicate this the rockers on cyl1 should then not be moving when engine position is moved slightly and cyl4 should be on the rock as they say the rotor arm should then be pointing at the lead that goes to number 1 cylinder check the sequence of the leads remember the dizzy turns anti clockwise as phil says the dizzy looks wrong should probably be about 90 degrees clockwise from that position also check the wiring to the dizzy as you have not used the wiring plug i tnink there should be another cable connected in there
hope this helps

No the head hasnt been off since I bought the engine.
I put a screwdriver down plug hole 1 and the piston is at the top when the notch in the pulley is at the largest of the spikes on the timing chain cover.
How should the dizzy be aligned? If I rotate is 90' clockwise that would put the vaccum right down by the oil filter.

I remember that piccy being helpful before I had the dizzy like that before I started playing about with the timing, when I had the bang and smoke thing going on with my carb. I'm waiting for biker to come on MSN so I can pick his brains again as we didnt cover this bit last night

I had another go myself today. I turned the dizzy to 11 o clock and started turning it clockwise and eventually got to about 1 o clock where it seemed the most 'poppy'. I took a video using my phone of my last attempt as you can hear the battery is going flat again. It pops quite a lot but thats it, even with a bit of throttle. I had better mention that the HIF38 is currently on there as the HIF44 I got is still in bits at the moment. I've checked there is fuel getting through by taking the pipe off the carb and cranking on the key, and also that fuel is getting into the head as the plugs are wet with petrol and also you can smell it coming through the plug hole. I tried earthing a plug to the head and found that the spark has gone white again now rather than the yellow coloured spark I had a few days ago. Obviously the battery needed the charge! The dizzy is slanting slightly to the right as can be seen in this piuc. Can anyone (Phil?!?!?!!!!!!) suggest anything else to try, or that I can check, or that I haven't done?

the lack of movment would be the first thing i would look into. also in the pic of the carb u have a union marked up "blanked off" is it actuly blanked off? because some where and some wernt, idealy you dont want it blanked off and put your oil breather onto it

Well if I rock the engine a bit more then theres moment on that side, its not seized or anything.
I'm only going by what BigEnd has been telling me, and showing me.
