I'm not into wires either, but it sounds like the connections on your solenoid may be at fault. Should I get some sandpaper on the contacts and see what happens? I cant remember how they were on the 998 before I took it out

I have not got a wiring diagram for the later minis. All my haynes manuals are early ones i'm afraid. The white and red cable should go from your ignition switch to a spade connector on the solenoid. The brown cable/s should go to the No1 connection on your fusebox. If there's anymore cables attached to the solenoid, except for the dirty great big battery cable, i'm not sure where they go.

It's dark now so will leave it for tonight but I will be checking the solenoid first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks dai!

If there's another brown cable attached to the same connector it should be going from the solenoid to the Alternator.

Just taken some new pics, these are hot off the usb cable : The top spade connector is not the same size at the bottom one, so theres no chance I put them on the wrong ones. All the ring connectors are on the same bolt.

Okay. Semi cool. There seems to be 2 cables missing. A white / red stripe and a white / yellow stripe.

I have seen a white and red stripe cable in the wiring loom on the inside of the bulkhead. It was cut when the immobiliser was installed (before I had the car). I'd joined them back together when the 998 was in and still running so I know its ok.
I'll pull the wiring loom back out of the black pipe I installed in my engine bay and see if I've got anything to match those wires.
I've got my haynes manual around here somewhere, it got soaked so I havent seen it in a while. What page are you looking at dai?

This is the manual I got, and to be honest its not far off the same condition now because I left it in the car and the leaking water got it. My engine is from a Metro but i'm assuming its exactly the same? I've found 'Mini 1275GT' on page 223 and 'Mini Clubman, Estate and 1275GT' on page 228. I'm not sure if I remember there being any more cables when the 998 was in there. I labelled all the cables up before taking them off with masking tape and a pen.

Shouldn't the ignition switch have a +12v on one side of it all the time anyway as its a switch - if you can't turn the ignition off with the switch surely it must be a faulty switch jc

The solenoid should have a white/red cable going to the ignition switch. That, in my opinion is why it won't turn off when the key is switched off.

Just been for a quick look under the cover of the steering column. I have to go out now so cant play today Bodge of the alarm immobiliser thing. They are connected up properly now. White and red wires connected with an extra length of cable Bare green wire and white and red wire cut off at block. White and red wire cut at both ends of block, no connections at either end Its tidy behind the steering wheel apart from this black cable has been cut close to the connector. The connections on the ignition barrel are solid. The only white&red cable I can see in the loom at the front of the car is for the oil pressure sensor.
