my mini is a nightmare..... its failing the mot on emmisions, the first time cause the head was stuffed, the hydrocarbons were excessive when she was revved, so got the old head reconditioned.....fitted new head gasket again and got her running..... she went back for mot and still excessive hydrocarbons....so off to the crypton tune....he said the problem was carberation so we get a newish carb and put her on.....to me shes sounding fine but its back off to the mot center tomorrow for another fail any ideas as to why she`ll be failing....we`ve done so much work on her and getting nowhere.

What are the figures for it? It's usually only the injection Minis that get grief come MOT time, so is the MOT tester being too picky?

at first the idle was ok...but on reving it went up to 4000??
next time the idle was high as well....thats after the head change ect....seems the carb wasnt cutting back....but not sure if having a new carb has sorted it

excessive HC is usaly caused by oil being burnt, a easy way to reduce them is to remove the oil breather pipe from the carb and block the hole then stick the end of the pipe into a catch tank ( read as beer can) or hide it down the back of the engine just for the MOT also either replace the air filter or clean it depending on what type you have

the air filter is nearly new.....cone type thing....
as for oil....my old carb was drinking oil from the dash pot....so possabily that?

yeah that would not have been helping, might be worth disconecting the breather to give it as much chance as posible, i had to do it a few years back on my old engine and it worked a treat

in a nut shell , hc mean unburnt fuel 1 , worn carb needle 2, worn rings or bore 3, weak spark at spark plug is the mini carb or injection

If it went up to 4000 then the carb spring might not be returning properly?
My sisters old 87' Mayfair was like that, but we had it crypton tuned and the mobile tuner marked out the spring and told us to press it down whilst the car was idling.
That way the emissions were well within the allowed limit.

done like lj said with pipe + replaced carb aswell, went back this morning + it 6000 ( even more now ) totally p-ssed off gonna try + slacken tappets off a bit as think might have done too tight as this can apparently cause the prob with the fuel coming out through exhaust p.s did i mention lots of preying aswell
