As you lot know i fanny'd around with the points and got them sorted on Friday. My dad realised the base plate on the dizzy is teribly stiff... we loosened it up by turning it a lot and spraying gallons of WD40 all over it... thought nothing of it.
Drove up to Ljonez's yesterday... nothing wrong! best its ever gone actually! flawless is what i think i said to my laydee friend!
shot myself in the foot i think.
Today went to duln elm and its driving like crap again now... kangarooig (not terribly), spluttering, and generally has as much power as a soggy naan bread...
whats up with it?
considering: Sticking in an old set of Leads weve got in the garage... maybe an old dizy cap if i can find one. sticking in my old knackered Aldron dizzy and see if that sorts it. Otherwise ive got no idea..
but theres no way im driving it again until its got its act together as at a roundabout i was almost shunted up the arse and then in the side because it decided to just crawl out of the junction before rolling across the roundabout idling while i was pumping the gas like an idiot...

try re-gapping the points, i had the exact same thing happen to me just after fitting new points, re-gapped them and it was fine. do they bed in or something silly like that? not had to touch points for a few years now mind ;D oh and your pully has been drilled and tapped, will mount the trigger wheel later. hopefully youl have the megajolt installed soon and you wont have to worry about points ever again ;D

my dad had a look at it with me again. we didnt check the gap but we checked the dwell and the timing. Dwell was spot on. timing was a touch out (but aparently wouldnt have caused the problems?) , adjusted that back. checked all the breather pipes, checked air filter, checked all spark plugs are going off, pushed the HT leads on harder in case they got loose what with me messing about with the dizzy cap constantly on thursday/friday, adjusted idle speed on the carb. took it around the block and it went like stink again! ive got no idea whats up with it! we didnt do anything to it and now its fine! Grrrrrr...... *shakes fist* Boycie are you the one that found that silly cheap Leccy set up on the Landrover forum? How do i know if it will fit my dizzy? whats the P+P time? i can see me getting it just to last me until after malvern so i can change to megajolt after!! May just change back to my horrible Aldron unit on Thursday and see if that sorts it. then while thats on the car and i can use it ill take the base plate off the current dizzy and clean it all out and grease it all up to get it moving about nicely. Lj... I cant wait for my megajolt now ;D Especially after hearing how smoothly your engine runs revs (even with the dodgy head gasket) once i get it all up and running im going to take off the points, burn them, laugh, video it, and upload it to youtube for all of those that have had to wrestle with points before...

Try another coil. Sounds like its lost its internal resistance and is burning your points. When the car is left to cool, the points can glaze over and cause it to run badly. Then when you fiddle about with it you clean the glazing off by just rubbing the feeler gauge on it. Check for burn marks/glazing.
Equally it could also be a dodgy condenser. But i would try another coil 1st tho.
Or another problem is your carb. If its an s.u it could be the waxstat has gone. Very common to go and they draw air causing your needle mixtures to go out the window.

if it is the waxstat, needle, its possably running really lean, so lean it could damage your engine,

any idea how i can tell if its the waxstat? weve got a colour-tune here. will that tell us if the waxstat is causing it to lean out?

Maybe a HIF44 from google pics? maybe? ive no idea really though lol. ill ask my dad once hes back! I've had a quick flick through Roxies thread and it looks like a HIF carb, so you won't have a Waxstat jet. Better check with your da first though.

As jamie said, check out the coil. Mind you, some of the aftermarket points and condensers on the market nowadays are a load of rubbish compared to the good old Lucas gear. Mind you, on saying that, the Polish Lucas gear isn't all it's cracked up to be.

the points are the same ones ive been getting previously so i know that those (in theory) should be tidy...
dad said hes got an almost new coil on the kit car so i can steal that temporarily to check how it goes with that.

Make sure the coil suits your electrical system IE Ballasted or Non-ballasted.
