as you know i have been having starting porblems, which i put down to spark gap on points. i had the plugs out this morning (they are new having done less than 100 miles). i find them full of oil, now i know this can have issues with sparking but more importantly i have read the book, and excess oil on the plugs can mean piston rings etc on thier way out.
is this a big job and am i right

Are you sure this is oil. If it is then you're correct it is probably the rings. If it isn't oil and they are just black then it could be excess fuel and the carb needs setting up. Sorry can't be more help.

as said if it is oil. its total strip down and rebuild with a re-bore and new pistons I'm afraid. you used to be able to buy over-sized rings that would take up any ware in the bores, I'm not sure if their still available ? even if you can get them i wouldn't bother as its the same amount of stripping etc to change them. so you may as well go for the re bore etc and at least then you know its sorted properly. the re-bore is relatively cheap, its the pistons which cost the most also allot of it comes down to how much you can do yourself? could well end up cheaper to buy a new engine.

i had a similar problem the other day and numer 2+3 plugs were covered in oil and thats what ithough it was rings etc but it ended up it was the head gasket so could be worth checking that first you,d have to take it off to do the job but if it is the problem at least the engine wont have to come out

If it was running weak then the plugs would be burning white not black. Sorry m8.

Also check your valve stem oil seals, this is the most common cause of oil on plugs. The mini origianlly only has 4 fitted but it is worth fitting them to all 8 valves.
A cheap fix but the head must be removed to do it so you may as well fix a new head gasket and then give it a try.
Whilst the head is off, its also possible to have a rough glance at the ring end gap and check the bore condition. If the gap is large and the bore is scored then its not worth meesing with.
