The MPi will have the standard higher gearing final drive 2.7?
Great for long motorway journeys, but not so good for accelerating/performance.
A 3.44 final drive is the classic sporty option or the 3.1 final drive is a good compromise.
A+ engines have ribbed blocks and don't have the old dynamo mounting fitted like on the older A series engine?

not sure about the gear ratios but i think they well all the same once the A+ was introduced, as said the mpi gear box will have a 2.7 FD which is not very good for performance, but thats easily sorted. I'm not sure if its true or not but there was talk of the mpi gearbox's being made of a lower grade alloy and had a tendency to crack personally I'd refurb the turbo box

Haven't heard that about the gearboxes cracking, but I've heard that they weren't always put together quite so well as before?
Something to do with shims?
Probably why there were so many warranty claims. I doubt the thin oil and long service intervals that Rover/BMW recommended helped either?

yeah apparently the center web in th box had a trendency to crack, so could well be due to incorectly shimed items, or it might be a load of rubish, but a few people have mentioned it in the past

I ran an mpi box on my supercharger, but as the guys have already mentioned, they were poorly shimmed from factory. I rebuilt from from scratch and it was ok.
Id re-build the turbo box if i were you, but make sure you get a manual telling you the tolerances allowed and shim it properly. Its a lot of hassle but well worth it.

2 be honest im not very mechanicly minded when it comes to gear boxes, just been offered a standard 1275 box, is that the same as the turbo one? ive been told its all the same apart from one bearing? just wondering if that'll do the job?
