when me and my dad were changing my timing cover oil seal, timing cover gasket, waterpump and my MegaJolt timing disc we topped up the water and forgot about it... tried it the other day... frozen solid hasn't it... hopefully ive not damaged anything, i hardly ever keep my radiator topped up and we could still easily remove my radiator cap so we are hoping its not cracked the block because the ice still had room to expand... now the questions are::: What else could it have damaged? how can i defrost it instead of waiting untill spring??? we have got a small directional ceramic heater, im considering putting that blowing onto the sump over the weekend, but im worried that it will heat it too quickly and then it WILL crack... im such a numpt

I've heard that it can damage the core plugs?
If your Mini is garaged, then just get the garage warmed up (cover all holes/gaps in the doors etc) and it should defrost gradually then.

I had the same problem back in 82 / 83 when it was colder than what it is now. Boil a kettle of water and pour it over the water pump first. That way by freeing the water pump you won't wreck the fan belt. Then concentrate on thawing the radiator using hot water or a fan. If the engine turns over without a struggle try and start it. Don't rev it up, just let it tick over. LOOK for leaks. Put ANTIFREEZE in .

Awwhhhh this is sounding quite poo... lol its not garaged, its under a car port. like i said im hoping nothing has cracked or anything because there was still room in the radiator when we opened the cap. so im hoping the pressure didnt built up to cause damage. ill pour some hot water over it and get the ceramic heater on the rad side of the block and leave it on there for a few hours tomorrow... if the core plugs are popped (they look fine) how do you get them back in? or is it a machine shop job?

No machine shop required as far as i know. Just knock them back in squarely.

core plugs, find a socket that fits snug inside the plug and smack it home square, (if) you have room to swing a hammer!

HAH banged to rights then?
I have to change my water pump too. Like I said though, I'm moving to London on Sunday so theres no immediate rush to change the pump. It'll have to be one of the many jobs I need to do when I return every month.
Sid is really starting to show his age now.....

Dont you believe it Coedy. I live in Bryn, which is on top of a mountan. It's cold here even in summer! I havent got a garage either so it's exposed to the elements!

Not tried it yet, i just poured boiling water on the rad, and the pump, then topped up the water that was in the rad with what was left in the kettle. then i left it 10mins or so. then went out and let it idle for a bit, seemed fine but only let it idle for a minute or two.
Ill make myself a cuppa to take out there now and ill sit in it and let it warm it idling properly and ill look for leaks when its got some pressure in it, and i can check the heaters then aswell.

I have heaters, I still have the same amount of water as i had when i first topped it up, all my core plugs are still in and cant see any cracks in the rad. i think my fanbelt has slackened up a fair bit though because it sounds like its slapping about a bit, other than that i think i may be safe. i did however notice shes a bit smokey... but shes been like that for a while...
