On dai's suggestion, I had a check of the valve clearances earlier to see if I could get rid of the annoying and uncool tappety noise from under mollys bonnet! Annoying thing is, they all seemed fine. Nice to get the experience of doing it though, only tricky bit was making sure the tappet was on the heel of the cam lobe, or the valve wide open. Think it might be the follwers are worn, anyone know if the mpi block has tappet chest cover thingies?? And if so, how tricky is it to get them off and remove the follwers with the exhaust in place?

no chest covers on a MPI, its engine strip. my tappets are very noisy even with a set of double valve springs, I think it must be an MPI thing.

When you did the rocker clearance did you check to see if there was any side to side movement of the rockers.. No amount of adjusting will take up any wear in the rocker shaft and rocker bush. Sadly, only the early 1275 blocks had tappet chest covers so the engine will have to come out to change the cam followers.

To be honest I didnt really check for any side to side play, there was some vertical play but I assumed that was normal? I'll whip the cover off and have another play tomorrow, oh the joys of quick release T-bars hehe ;D Thats annoying about the chest covers though, why would they get rid of them? Especially on a car that goes through oil like they do, and where the followers are bound to wear when people dont change the oil regularly... Did people get problems with them leaking maybe?

is it more of a rattle than a tap? as when timing chains make alot of noice once they have stretched abit. Especially on a car that goes through oil like they do just noticed that comment, are you using alot of oil ? an A series engine in good condition wont really be any worse than other engines

It's the noise that comes to mind when I think of tappety, just a really unflattering sound It's not too loud, not as bad as ive heard, but it certainly wont get better on its own so its bound to get worse. Dont think i'm using more oil than I should be. Not changing it as regularly as i should be (hard to do it myself on a steep and busy road without axle stands) but i just meant that since people reccomend chaning the oil every 3000 miles and things that they tend to go thorugh more oil changes, rather than the oil is being used more quickly.

Well you really don't need axle stands to change the oil? Plus using a good classic 20W/50 oil (like Duckhams Q Classic or that Classic stuff Halfords sell with a picture of a Mini on the tin) might help things run a fair bit smoother?
