Just spotted that BMW are now the main sponsers of this years IMM/Mini 50 What are your thoughts on this ? I know a lot of people said they wouldnt attend the official BMW event in silverstone , Would you think twice before going to mini 50 now? There is a poll on the mini world website and looks like the vasy majority are dead against it.

Not interested if it has anything to do with Bini's It's taking all the fun and meaning out of the real mini

I think that due to the fact that BMW would rather every classic mini was scrapped, many of us old mini drivers would prefer to boil our feet in cow dung than attend a bmw sponsored event....
BMW....GRRRRRRR

I have to sympathise with the organisers (Birmingham Mini Owners Club). They need a huge amount of sponsorship for an event like this to be successful..Granted, Classic Mini orientated firms such as Minisport have contributed to the cause, but who in their right mind would turn down a very large sponsorship offer like BMW's. I wish that the event could be run without BMW's assistance but sadly, in todays current cash crisis money talks. If i did attend the show i wouldn't be looking at the Binis anyway. Far better and nicer Classic Mini's to dribble over.

Yes but you just know BMW will use the opportunity to publicise the BINI to the hilt. We were really spoiled by Rover when they gave us entry into these major shows at Donington Park or Silverstone for free. Perhaps if Rover had behaved similarly appallingly, they'd still be around today? But I doubt we'd have had the same respect for them or the real Mini then.

looks like I'm not going now, granted BMW spent hundreds of thousands to keep the mini alive by updating it to become the spi and mpi but the way they have forced some classic mini companies to stop trading due to copy right etc is ridiculous. also some how they have now got my name and address and keep sending me adverts, the last one included a letter which started with " remember the smile on your face when you bought you new MINI......." then goes on to say about their new models

BMW bought Rover in the early part of 1994, so they had nothing to do with the SPi Mini and Mini Cooper. Rover footed the bill to keep the Mini going themselves on that during 1991.
Granted they (whilst Issigoni's Nephew was in charge of BMW anyway) paid for the MPi Mini upgrade in 1996, but I've heard that the Mini could have ran for a few more years beyond 2000.
Unfortunately it was forced to die to make way for the blob.
