Is it a case of poor maintenance on the choppers or sheer bad luck.?

Dai, after the last one 6 weeks ago, you would assume they were on the ball at the moment with regards maintenance, it's ironic however that BP asked Bond helicopters to discontinue using the newer design chopper until they found out the reason behind the accident which allowed them to use the older chopper which was involved yesterday. BP now no longer use Bond! The worst part is, on the lifejacket there is a personal locator beacon which is meant to activate upon deployment of the jacket which sends out a homing signal. Unfortunately they thought the accidental deployment of this beacon may have played a small part in the last accident due to signal interference and asked that ALL PLB's were removed so now you have a situation where the missing bodies may now never be recovered due to not having locators fitted. I assume they would have had to get permission from the aviation authorities and the coastguard etc to allow this to happen, you can bet the newspapers keep that quiet.................. if they even know about it. Truly terrible eh?

Yeah Dai, but you also gotta weigh up the fact there is good money to be made when the risks are higher. Thats not to say I accept I may die at some point cos we only work to live, not to put ourselves in the line of fire but certain jobs pay better than others when the jobs are more specialised and probably the most dangerous thing any of us out here do is step on a chopper. The work itself would be no different on a petrochem facility on the beach but all modes of transport have inherent risk including getting on a bus, or driving a car etc. (a mini is even worse.......joke
