Engine oil should be checked weekly. The level should be between ‘Min’ and ‘Max’ on the dipstick. To top up from ‘Min’ to ‘Max’ will take approximately 1 pint of oil. Use 20W.50 or 10W/40 multigrade oils.
Top Tip A complete oil change, including the filter, should be done every 6000 miles.
Cooling System should be checked weekly. The level should be maintained approximately 1” below the base of the radiator filler neck. The mini is notorious for using / losing its coolant; remember to keep it topped up.
The system capacity is 6½ pints including the heater. The system thermostat opens at 88° C. If your temperature gauge indicates high, or your heater runs cold, suspect the thermostat and get it checked out.
Top Tip Use a solution of ? to ? water all year round. This helps to keep the system cleaner and free from rust deposits.
Hydraulic Fluids Fluid levels in the Brake and Clutch master cylinders should be checked weekly. On early Steel tanked models, the level should be maintained to the base of the filler neck. On the later Plastic tanked models, the level should be maintained to the “MAX” indication line marked on the body.
Top Tips Regular checks will highlight any problem before it’s too late; remember, no brake fluid, no brakes; no clutch fluid, no clutch!!
Change the hydraulic fluids every 24000 miles or 2 years and overhaul the complete systems every 48000 miles or 4 years.
Hydraulic fluid makes a very good paint stripper so remember to wipe any spills off your bodywork.
Tyres Check tyre pressure and tread depth regularly.
Recommended tyre pressures:
145 x 10 Front – 28 Rear – 26
165/70 x 10 Front – 24 Rear – 26
145/70 x 12 Front – 28 Rear – 28
165/60 x 12 Front – 29 Rear – 30
175/50 x 13 Front – 29 Rear – 26
Top Tip Running your tyres 2 to 4 psi above the stated figures can improve fuel consumption by up t 5 mpg and reduce wear.
Additional weekly checks
Lights : check all bulbs are functioning and clean the lenses
Washers : check and top up the level, adding screenwash to recommended dilution
Battery : if non maintenance-free type, check electrolyte level and top up with distilled water
Normal service intervals
6000 miles or 6 months : interim service
12000 miles or 12 months : full service
