UMMMM, I hate to put a damper on your "freebie", but you would not gain much power with this head. The head you need, if you can get one is a 12G295 Cooper head. Even in standard form, so long as the compression ratio is modified, this head is probably the best you can get..

Poo!!!
So it won't matter if I used this to mod to Stage III, no big sin???

Check on Fleabay first to see if those heads are fetching good money. I don't think they are though. Only a purist building a genuine 997 cooper would be interested in them.

What was the power difference - 997 over 998???
What also made the difference between the two???

997 is a short stoke torque monster (I think). The cams are amazing in a 998, and 1275's... If your wanting more power, why not look at fitting a 12G940 head? (1275 head), get a MG Metro head, that will be better than a stg4/5 998 head, and best of all, the MG will be in standard form, so imgine what a stg4 1275 head would be like on a 998?

Doesn't the block need reworking to stop the valves hitting the top of the block???

Yep, its known as pocketing, OR get the valves recess into the head.

Right Acid old boy. The difference between the 12G202 and the 12G295 heads. 202--inlet, 1-5/32 in. exhaust, 1 inch. 295--inlet,1-7/32 in. exhaust, 1 inch. Not much difference there i know, but the beauty of the 295 head is vastly better inlet ports and a larger more open chamber design. That is why you need to skim the head face to raise the compression ratio. The standard Cooper 998s had raised top pistons. So far as HP is concerned both heads on their respective engines gave about 55 BHP, but the 998 cooper was quicker on the 0-60 times by about 2 seconds and 5mph faster top end at 90 mph.

So Dai if I had bigger inlets fitted and a good port and polish plus the skim to the 12G202 would I be on the right tracks

Theoretically, yes. Seeing as your head is a "freebie" the cost of modifying it to Stage 3 including converting it to unleaded, would bring it up to and possibly better than a standard 295 head which anyway, would need converting to unleaded.

Never knew you got the head for free - lucky sod! But I agree with Dia, mod' what you got But be picky who you get the work done by, as many different engine tuners, have different specs for "stages". For example, a Minisport stg3 head, has mild porting, and 36/29 valves... whereas my Rob Walker stg3 head, has ports to store several Channel ferrys inside, and 37/31 Valves... so do your shopping.
