had a play with the timing earlier.....theres me wiv me marigolds on adjusting the dizzy while byron turned the engine over.....nothing.
back to basics.....byron did the gap on the points ....checked for a spark...theres def a good spark,
so maybe petrol or still timing.....can anyone tell me where the fuel in pipe goes on the carb....think its on right but best to check...lol....

If you've got wet plugs after turning the engine over then you must have the fuel inlet right Will go and dig my carb out of the shed just to be sure jc

On my carb, which is off an MG Metro, there are 3 open pipes on the Left Hand Side as you look at it fitted on the car.
Two are pointing slightly upwards and the lower one is horizontal and feeds into the float chamber on the bottom.
its this one that the fuel inlet pipe goes on......................I think!!!!
As for only having petrol on 2 out of 4 plugs........ I would say that was pointing to engine timing again, but wouldn't swear to it.
Swear at it may be but thats another story!!!!!
Maybe someone like dog knows more?

just thought of something, I'm sure there was a pipe on one of my carbs in the past that had to be blocked off otherwise it wouldnt run, I "think" it was the top pipe on the carb above the petrol in pipe, not sure if that makes any sence? Yes you are spot on Phil. Now you've said that, I'm sure thats correct jc

Found it at last. Re the carb inlet etc. Asyou look at the carb on the car, on the left hand side of the carb: The tube closest to the manifold is the Crankase vent tube. This is the one that should be blocked off. The one that could be directly behind it is the vent tube. The tube can also be directly undreneath as an alternative position. The FUEL INLET is just above the JET adjusting screw. positioned on the lower left hand rearmost part of the carb.

another couple of things you could try firstly wind the mixture screw all the way in one direction and then work your way back in the opposite direction you could also try getting a cap full of fuel and pour it down the hole at th back of the carb that the airfilter goes over the oval shaped one if it fires up runs thens stops you have a fuel starvation problem these are just idea,s you also try taken the fuel pipe that comes of the fuel pump and goes to the carb then crank the engine (just flick the key) and see if you get any fuel though (which by what you,ve said soo far you will have

there is also a little vacum pipe (very small on the top between the carb and the block is that on or blanked off) this might be the one phil is onabout?.

back to basics if not already done mark tdc (top Dead center) on the crankshaft pulley with a bit of tipex and also the big pointer on the side of the timing chain cover.then crank the engine til the two line up with each other, then take number one plug out and poke a screwdriver down the hole and see if the piston is on the top. if yes then take the dizzy cap off and see where the rotar arm is pointing on the inside of the cap then trace the lead to see if it goes to number one if it does not then turn the engine around once more till the marks line up and do those checks again if it does not line up the second time round the take the dizzy shaft out and turn though 180* and repeat. also check that the points are open at this point.

Great news on Sooty, even if it's running like a bag of spanners, ;D at least there's a light at the end of the tunnel and once you get it sorted it will be sooooooo much easier to fettle in the future It'll be Boycie's Cabrio next on the agenda then ;D jc
