My 1982 998 Mini has been playing up lately, wondering if there could be some advice out there for me...
First problem is lots of white smoke, usually when pulling away. Does this mean there's an oil leak? Not sure.
The other problem is with starting. The battery isn't flat but the motor is having real difficulty turning over and when the engine does start it's making a funny sound best described as 'bubbling'. Is this an ignition problem? i.e. condenser or points. Not really sure where to start...

Sorry to hear of your problems. Could be any number of things really. First of all, is the car losing any water from the radiator.?? Is there any oil in the radiator. You can usually see a film of oil floating in the top of the rad. This indicates a head gasket problem.. Check those things first.

Ive been having problems with the radiators yeah, top hose has been leaking a bit and the thermostat gasket needs changing (I'll be doing this on the weekend). I also changed the thermostat last weekend to an 82 degree so i dont think the engine's warming up enough (and the heater certainly isnt).

Sounds like you've got an airlock in the cooling system, hence the heater not working. Make sure the heater tap is open when you next check the water level in the rad. Or the water hose to or from the heater may be gunged up.

Something else I've noticed today, the oil has quite a creamy sort of colour and theres a fair bit of mayonaise around the rocker cover and cap. Does this mean there's water in the oil?

with refrence to the having trouble turning over check and clean the earthstraps, it could be that the starter is not getting enough current.
