Hey all.

I would like to put something by you all, just the check I've checked what I can check really...

Right...
Freshly built my engine, using a BRAND new crank, so means its 0/0 and I had some "std" thrust bearings come with the crank too (don't ask me the make, no idea) so, in afect, this should be right?

When building the engine, I checked I had 0.004" end float, may of been a shade smaller... like 0.003" as I only have feeler gauges, and don't have access to a DTI

So built the engine with no real bother... fitted, it starts, and for about 50miles, it drove nicely. Bit "stuttery" when starting off, but I put this down to me having a Orange Diaphram with a rally plate?

So other than the my speedo dieing - as in not reading my speed, it drove fine all weekend, till I came to a set of traffic lights, put my foot on the clutch, and it stalls the engine... its done it ever since. It does do it in every gear, although, not as much when going from 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th, but I put this down to having more revs?

So now, you can breath on the clutch pedal, and the engine tone will change to sound like it under alot of strain and load... and if I countine to press VERY slowly, the engine will continue to run, but very rough.

The tick over is perfect, smooth as you like, and it revs up nicely too. Its only when coming to select gear. It does it from cold, and when its hot...

Anyways, my susspiton is Thrust Bearings... but I need to know what else can cause the above, try to save me not having to remove the engine....

I have been down, and check the crank pully moves when clutch is pressed - which it does, not by much, but it does slightly move...

Any ideas what to check other than the crank pully?

:-/I'm not sure that the Crank Thrust washers are at fault here.
Did you check the clearance on the Idler Gear and the Primary Gear.

I think the problem is in the Clutch / Drop Gears area.
Was the splines on the clutch plate moving freely on the Primary Gear when you built the motor up.

All bearing were all "std" size, as I had no wear or regrinds in the engine... Do you think it might be the clutch stop gap?

You should have about 25 thou gap between the clutch arm and the Return Stop adjusting bolt. This exercise is just to make sure the clutch is properly adjusted.

Slacken the big nuts, get someone to press the clutch pedal and hold it down. Screw the nuts back in until they touch the housing, release the clutch pedal then screw the big nuts in another FLAT.
Now check the gap as per previous post.
While I'm here did you put the correct spacers under the clutch driving straps.

Its a secondhand fly/cltuch, and it was running well on the previous car...

Ok.

I still have a problem

I've rebuilt it again, this time using a DTI etc.

I deffo have 0.004" Crank end float, and 0.0035" Primary gear end float.
I have cleaned the splines on the primary gear, as the clutch plate felt sticky on it, it then went on nice and smooth.

Orange Diaphram is set up correctly, bolted down to 18ft/lb, flywheel bolt, torqued up to 150ft/lb, with lock tab.
New Clutch realase bearing (heavy duty type). Stop nut correctly set.

Started the engine tonight, little rough, as the timing isn't completely set as yet, thought as its ticking over kinda, let put my foot on the clutch, see how it is... it died. Adjusted the clutch stop nut, started the engine, and it died again.

I am seriously considering, selling the 1380, and getting a decent 1275 (untouched) just because this thing is doing my head in now. I double and trebel checked all the gaps, etc, and it still fecks up on me.

HELP!!!

Right, okay.
First off, sorry to hear your problem has not been cured.
Which leads me to think that the Flywheel area might be to blame.
Bear with me on this one while i try and explain.
When a Flywheel is lightened most of the metal is taken off the outer surface. (Diaphragm side).
Whatever amount of material is taken off should be replaced by spacers / washers fitted under the driving straps attached to the flywheel.
If the dring straps are not level / flush with the lugs of the backplate (with the Clutch plate in between) your clutch will not work as it should because you Haven't got the correct operating clearances.
I'll try and find some pics which will explain it better.

Bu**er.. Yank the flywheel off, Put it on a flat surface with the pressure plate and clutch plate underneath it. No Diaphragm.
get a straightedge and put it on one of the lugs of the pressure plate.
Measure the distance between the straightedge and the surface of the flywheel where the straps bolt through.
Whatever that gap is, should be made up with a spacer or washers until the measurement / gap is totally flush with the top face of the pressure plate lug.

Mr Dai.

Would this be the gap your on about?

I placed the backplate on the bench, then clutch, with the offset middle, facing down, then placed the fly over the top....

If I have it right, I;ve been running the clutch far far far toooooo tight!!
