While at Brooklands Mini Day I bought from the Wood & Picket stand a new (?) type of ultimate engine steady bar that does not rely on being bolted onto the thermostat housing studs and so should be a lot less obtrusive and unsightly in an engine bay and be easier to fit and remove when necessary. The part of the bracket that is attached to the engine is secured by the 2 top bolts of the water pump and the engine bulkhead bracket is larger . Don't know how easy or difficult this will be to fit but will update once done, after all..............theres no rush..................plenty of time. jc

Well seeing as how the Mini's been around since the 50's, I think I've got a few weeks or months or even years before I have to worry about the bracket Phil!!! ;D It was the usual expensive W&P item though at £39.00 but should look much better and work as the existing one does . jc

Ahhh the water pump utimate steady...
Easier to fit I know that much! Was thinking of getting one, but I don't see the usfulness of a extra steady that side of the engine?

Neither did I dog untill I started sheering off exhaust brackets and splitting manifold pipes. so I fitted the 'ultimate' thermostat securing type then and the engine became rock steady and no problem ever since.
Any 1380 will 'twitch' so much when you rev it, even with the nylon type bushes fitted, that fitting one of these now may well save you lots of bother later on.
I would recommend them anyway.

Think of it as extra insurance and peace of mind. How many times have you heard of the standard tie-bar Bolt snapping off in the block.

I guess thats very true.
I ahd considered fitting an extra pair on the otherside of the engine. A lower, and upper. To match the orginals.
Also, I guess with about 100bhp, under the bonnet, the 1380 is going to twich quite a bit...

I used the standard Ultimate engine steady on my rally car and i never had any problems whatsoever with any breakages with the engine mounts or Manifolds. True, i had the Remote type gearchange which stiffened things up even more. If You're using a Rod change gear linkage an extra Engine steady is even more important.

Have found these cheaper (£35.19 + P&P £7.50) from Avonbar Racing if anyone needs one. Apparently they are made by Avonbar jc

Cheek!!! I already bought one in Brooklands Corina and have fitted it this afternoon. New bulkhead bracket fitted after a bit of a fiddle. The bolts have to be pushed up from inside the bulkhead box section then the washer and nuts put on - the slots in the bolts are there so that they can be held steady with a screwdriver when tightening the nuts. ( a good tip to remember ) The Water Pump end of the bracket secured by the 2 top water pump bolts (easy with the rad and fan removed ! ) The arm of the bracket in place ( notice the slots in the ends of the thermostat housing studs too - same tip as above!) and finally with everything else put back in place around it. Much less obvious than the old bukly bracket and now the thermostat housing can be left alone and is back as it originally was. Overall an easy job to carry out although a little bit fiddly! jc

I Gotta say, it does look a lot neater than the other steady. You should be ready to start the Beast up now.
