well I'm going to start a thread on building an engine for my mini as my mini is an automatic i cant help but feel that a load of the power is being stolen by that auto box , so i weighed up the options of buying a fully built package , or building my own and i fancy building my own , i want it to be a fast road 998 , I'm in no rush and just want to acquire bits as i find them so it will be a slow and steady build as and when i have time and money . firstly i am on the look out for a 998 engine or block , can anybody help with this ? Desired spec :- 998 block bored to 1.1 and pocketed 12g940 head, ported nice power full cam Kent 276 i think fully light end and balanced bottom end with straight cut gearbox hopefully running a mega jolt system this is my first engine build and i am currently sourcing parts so if anybody is selling anything i have listed id be happy to take a look , cheers Gav

Fist off you cant bore to 1.1 you would have to buy a 1098 engine to begin with, as it has a longer crank I believe? *Waits for Lawson to turn up*

Lawsons got a thread on here somewhere with his fast road 998 build, Im off out so cant really look for it, but for a 1.0 on a safe map his car is pretty tasty

Thanks for the info , is it really that much better to have it bored out , I mean is it worth the money ? Hopefully a guy can hold onto a 998 engine till payday without selling it and I can strip it down and get finding parts , any advice Lawson ??

On a 998 a rebore will make pretty much no difference even on a screaming fire breathing racer it will add 1 maybe 2bhp

If you want lots of "tuning" or "Build" info, get the "Tuning The A-Series Engine" book written by David Vizard. Lots of good tricks and tips in there and an excellent read Explains lots of techy things in everyday lingo too

Should be able to pick one up cheap on ebay etc

well had my engine delivered by Phil this week and have commenced to strip it all down , have now got to they point where i need to separate the flywheel housing from the engine but i need the clutch/flywheel puller to do it , dose anybody have on of these and a spare 5 mints so i can pull it off ? got loads of pics to follow soon the board seem to be in good condition but there is a tiny bit of corrosion at the top of the bores , you will see when i get the pics up , one thing i am worried about is that the waterways seem very rusted and i do not know what i can use to get these all clean , anybody know what i can do ? thanks all Gav

I've got a puller, a hydraulic one, but I won't be up your way till next week now. Regarding the rusty waterways, molasses is very good for cleaning the rust off, but have not tried it yet. Another method which I've only just heard about is using bilt hambers Deox C rust remover. This is the granule type which is mixed with water. I'll have to get hold of the bloke who has used this method to find out how he did the job, whether he dipped the whole thing in the solution or blanked off the holes and just filled the head. Or you could try flushing the loose crap out with a pressure washer. A lot of the crud will be rusty silt.

Doesn't look like it, but you would need to have the bores measured to know for sure. The line at the top is normal. But it you can feel a lip at the bottom of it then its likely it needs a horn at least
