Hi guys, New to the whole Mini scene . Thought id drop a message say hello, Recently purchased this bad boy on Ebay after much searching around for one that ticked the boxes for me. He goes by the name of Earl (For obvious reasons), Picked it up from Glastonbury on Saturday drove for nearly 4 hours through Terrential rain and 30 minutes of stop start traffic. It didnt miss a beat and got me home safe as houses. Start of a good future I hope. The car is currently resident in a secret location in swansea (my mates garage) Until I get back from my summer hols in a months time. Work starts then! Its had a lot of work in the past including a full resto in 2007 so my job is going to be to finish it off to my specification and enjoying! More photo's in this album. s78.photobucket.com/albums/j109/john_thefruitman/Earl%20The%20Mini/These are just the initial photo's from ebay more to follow next weekend. P.S. The interior really is that nice! Attachments:

Well....
The boots rotten, Ive got a replacement that I'm thinking I'm gonna spray myself in shiny black. The wheels need a Refurb but are nice so I'm Proabably going to do them either white to match the roof or black to match the boot.
Ive got a set of 70's spots to go on, (ofcourse)
The rest of the shell is solid no major rust that needs cutting or welding so Im gonna re-seal the underside, arches and sills with a fresh coat of Hammerite or similar and deal with small patches of rust as I can.
The rear sub isnt great but it isnt bad so ill probly wire brush it and paint it again with hammerite. (it passed MOT with no advisorys in march)
The front end is pracitally all new but the pannels were done in 2008 so it needs a bit of sanding and filling for the respray which will be the last thing. body wise.
Oh then the mirrors will go white. White bonnet stripes and white pin stripe down each side. I may change the rear window trim for chrome in time.
Engine wise he's a 998. No major mods, Electronic ignition Uprated Carb.
Running well although the Carb makes a massive breathing noise when i press the accelarator. Im a scuba diver and it sounds like an air regulator opening up and air gushing in. I think its normal... any comments?
Also when i put it in my mates garage today I noticed a black liquid spitting out the exhaust. (it wasnt oil) it could be petrol or water. Im thinking it was water cos it washed off soooo easily and didnt stink... again thoughts??? The car had recently cooled down and then been restarted.
Also any hints tips comments and advice more than welcome. As i said im a noob to mini's having wanted one for ages!

Looks like a great base to work from! (Even better if its solid! ;D) Running well although the Carb makes a massive breathing noise when i press the accelarator. Im a scuba diver and it sounds like an air regulator opening up and air gushing in. I think its normal... any comments? If it has anything but a standard air filter this is probably induction rawr ;D Also when i put it in my mates garage today I noticed a black liquid spitting out the exhaust. Chances are it is just condensation (if it has cooled down) and then the water has been dragging the soot up the exhaust and out when its rev'd. If it doesnt smell I wouldnt worry Welcome to the club! ;D

Thanks for saying hi guys. Back in Swansea now, went and took the Mini out today.#
Good news. As soon as the engine got hot. No liquid from exhaust. was definitely water did make a nice black mark on the wall as I started him up.
Bad news. He has a bit of an oil leak. Not sure from where until I get it over a pit. Its at the back of the sump on the passenger side. Not a lot. Maybe 30ml? max Didn't drop on the dipstick at all. Just spread onto the paper i put down (i was half expecting it)
The engines holding good oil pressure though. Reckon im gonna do a full service soon anyway so ill put that on the to do list.

Could be the gear selector seal. these give up pretty quickly a fix kit is available (Its just a new seal pretty much) on minispares etc but until you have a proper nose at the problem then you wont know for sure. (The selector seal is located right at the back of the sump in the middle, not so much over the passenger side)

right. The oil leak is so minor not worrying for now. Gonna crack on with body work. Below are a couple of pics and I have a couple of questions that would be good if anyone could help me out. The Wings and A Panels need sealing inside. This is a picture of what they look like atm Pretty nasty. Although its all surface rust. What would you recommend I do to stop it getting worse? Time isn't an issue I'm happy to spend the time that's needed. I have my plans but id like to know your thoughts. This is the worst of the exterior rust so not much to do there sills are solid Subframes quite red. Will hammerite it short term and then replacing long term. Finally going to be replacing the air filter when i service it. What K&N do I want for this?? Current under bonnet shot. Lots to be Crackin on with!

First pic is of the a panel not the sills but either way a rub down and rust treatment then paint would be ok As for the sills they might be solid but they are oversills

As for the sills they might be solid but they are oversills How can you tell? I know they probably are but i couldn't see any welding seams. Not too worried cos im not after a concourse show car just a bit of fun learning about cars and driving it this summer

The trouble with over-sills is that its very unlikely that what remains of the original sills underneath is rust free. The corrosion then festers and gets a lot worse spreading into adjacent panels and even the 'new' over-sills. making what was once a relatively easy sill replacement into major bodywork repair!!! It is always best to replace sills with original sill panels then make sure the new panels are 'treated' inside and out to prevent future problems coming back. Spraying Waxoil or similar in the sill cavity normally helps with this. My advice would be to remove the 'over-sills' ASAP, see exactly what you have got underneath, change the rusted out bits for new panels, treat with new paint and waxoil. Job done................. (properly!!!!!!!! :

Well i had a good look and yes definately been oversilld at some point (probably 2008 when the car was restored/upgraded before). For now ive rubbed em down to paint them with hammerite. In time.. I may well rip em off but only if i decide i want to put a lot of money into the car. Im doing it on a budget atm. so that kind of work im staying clear of in the short term
The guy that put the over-sills on did the rest of the resto work to a really high standard so I can only assume the same with the sills. They are a really nice fit
Also there are vents further up. just not in pics.

If they are oversills, then Jesus himself could have welded them in to a spectacular standard... but they would still rust... Oversills were made to just chuck on over the top of the old rotten sill. as a result the rust gets a fantastic habitat and it rusts through the old sill, your innersill, your jacking points, and your seatbelt mounts, it then starts attacking the new metal (oversills) as it will put up a bit more of a fight. The results of oversills: They were put on around 2006 I think (just after we got the car) and were all waxoiled, sealed up nice. That photo is from 2009 (I think) And they also looked fine before getting hammered a bit to test the integrity (hence the nice surprise holes in them). But they were getting removed at the time anyway because I didnt want oversills on the car. If your doing it on a budget just hope the innersills etc are ok when it comes time to remove the oversills...

Also, forgot to say, Subframe doesnt look too bad! (just that rear cross beam really..) The part in the second photo of it is where they seem to let go and end up getting plated and that just looks like surface rust to me. give it a proper going at with a wire brush and sandpaper before you paint it and it should turn out tidy! Why you getting a K&N? Looks like a pipercross foam filter is on it to me. You'd get no gain swapping to a K&N.... (unless you want to swap to a standard airbox with K&N in, or you just like the 'ribbed' look of the K&Ns)
