Hey guys i am currently running my 1275 mg metro engine on a HIF44 carb with a K&N air filter, along with a water heated inlet manifold. I also have a stage 2 maniflow lcb manifold and a twin box maniflow twin dtm centre exit exhaust. Does anyone know what needle i should be using in the carb? cheers

BDL is what's used for stage 1 so that would be a good starting point.

Have a look here www.mintylamb.co.ukSelect "SU Needle compare-o-rama" and then select "HIF44" You can compare up to 5 different needle profiles together. Use whatever 'needle code' you have fitted now as one choice and BDL as another choice so that you can compare them against each other. Use the drop down selection of possible 'new needles' to compare others The "higher" the profile, the "richer" the needle is. Yes. The needle 'code' should be stamped on the needle. Hope this helps It was very useful to me when selecting richer needles for the MGB. jd

Looking on "mintylamb" shows that a BDL needle or a BDE needle would be better suited than your BEZ.
You could try trawling through the other needle options th in case there is a better choice available tho.

cheers jack, ive been on mintylamb and compared them and had no idea at all what it all meant lol, all i know is that the BDL needle is best suited from what ive got from the needle charts, any idea of what the BEZ needle is from? i've been searching for it and cant find on any of the needle charts etc

Also worth looking at the carb spring and damper oil aswell

Look at the 53, 55 or 58 needle options on mintylamb, they are richer still than the BDE or BDL and might be a further option.
On the profile the bottom left of the line would effect idle or low revs and the top right effects high revs. A straight (ish) line is a good option, the higher the line means the richer the needle profile
I think, if it were me, I would go with the BDE as it is slightly richer at its base (tickover/low revs)and see what improvement you get.

Metro, Allegro, Maestro Austin 1100 or 1300 Doesnt really matter cos you know its too weak anyways.

If the carb is off a metro or allegro then there's a good chance the fuel float level is wrong aswell as the carb sits at a different angle on a mini

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6Le_HkrkKQheres how its done on a HS carb, its the same idea on a HIF but you have to turn over the whole carb, cant remember what the gap should be off the top of my head

it can cause fuel starvation as the float will cut off the fuel supply to the carb when its actually still needed or it can cause the carb to overflow.
im 99% sure the figure is in the haynes manual

Best way to get it sorted now would be a rolling road session.
