Sorry if this has all been said before...I'm a useless woman and need direction! So I was on my way home from Abercynon today and whoopee doo, for the millionth time this year, the car starts misfiring. I managed to nurse her back home but I'm getting a bit sick of it. Ordered points this afternoon but I really think it's time I got electronic ignition. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to go about swapping? I've heard about electronic distributors and kits but what's the best, most reliable way to do it? And please remember I'm a skint student!! My Dad will do all the work, but I reckon you lot are the best ones to ask about brands etc.

Hi Essess
From my experience I would fit Lumenition Optronic (infra red) or Magnetronic (magnetic) ignition systems, have used both in the past - easy fit / conversion and once fitted 100% reliable.
Don't know current prices but Magnetronic is cheaper than Optronic.
Hope this helps

Silly question but are you sure your dizzy is in ok nick? its wierd you burning up your points so quickly, id point the finger at other things first. although im a mechanical idiot... www.minispeed.co.uk/classic/index.cgi?grp=&id=mtk003&task=showproductMagnetronic system. The optornic kits ive found seem to be between £120 - £140 but theres a few different types so i dont know. Other than that Mappable ignition? Megajolt Jnr. costs normally about £180 from what i understand (but does seem to be a bit of fannying about, which is putting me off it myself) but that means you dont need a distributor/points/condensor. so it takes away 3 bits that could die straight away. and promises of better MPG, Power and Reliability. but members in Swansea Mini Club have recomended the magnetronic kit to both me and my dad so that sounds a safe bet

Are you on points too then coedy boy? I am also a mechanical idiot. I'll ask my Dad how old my distributor is when he gets in from work. Im sure he'll be more than pleased to find out my car is on deaths door again. How long are points meant to last? We only regapped them the last time we checked them. The RAC man put a new set in and a new condenser on the 2nd May. Ive been looking at that set on the minispeed site, but now I'm wondering if it's worth buying it if my dizzy's on the blink? Bloody cars!!

Yep im on points aswell.... But because im tuning my engine for reliability/economy eventually i hope to have Megajolt. but thats after i sort my new interior and suspension kit lol.
my points last ages...... 5/6/8months? normally only change them once they start playing up....
well you could get your dad to give your distributor a once over before buying. part of me says 'it should work better than its working now' but the other part of me says 'if the distributor is playing up and munching the points then maybe itll damage the magnetronic kit'
For the sake of a few hours id nag you dad to double check it and then double check what type of magnetronic kit you'd need (if theres more than one type! *shrug*)

www.minispeed.co.uk/classic/index.cgi?grp=&id=mtk003&task=showproductWell done coedy, thats the exact one that I have fitted in the past and for about the same price as far as I can recall. Well worth it Essess. Also eliminates the problems from a worn dizzy shaft at the same time. Definately a fit and forget item, very easy to fit and worth every penny jc

A worn dizzy shaft?? that means when you take the dizzy out the shaft is reaaalllllly loose yeah? if so will the magnetronic fit aldron dizzys? because ive got an aldron dizzy that i removed because i wasnt comfortable with how loose the shaft was. now ive got a standard vacum advance jobby and its lovely. if itll fix the looseness on the aldron and would be swapable between the original and the aldron then ill look at getting one! what effect does its looseness have to performance etc? Edit-- sorry for the hijack...

what effect does its looseness have to performance etc? Edit-- sorry for the hijack... it can really effect it, if you have to much side to side movement it can create irregular gaps between the points, also if the worm gear on the end of the shaft is worn it can cause tie timing to be a few degrees out. i quite like what a member of minifinity said when comparing dizzys and megajolt "there really is no contest. electronic ignition is a superb sticking plaster for an age-old gammy leg, but amputation, prosthetics and spare-part surgery are the future" you realy shouldnt have gone thru a set of points in a month, best check your condser and coil to find out where the problem is. also what size are you setting the gap too?

I think it makes no difference about worn shafts as once you set the timing correctly the Magnetronic module acts like a 4 position switch passing through the magnetic sensor. As the module is a moulded plate the play in the shaft is not critical.
All I can say is that from my experience of them they are a one off, easy fit upgrade at a reasonable cost, without the added hassle that seems to come with the Megajolt.

Just spoke to my Dad and he says hes been aware of my dizzy being fudged for ages and thats why Im going through points like water. I think I'm just gonna bung it in the garage and let somebody else have the hassle. Tommy Tunes in Abercynon said he'll supply and fit an Aldon electronic distributor for 160 quid...says it's better to rip it all out and start from scratch. If I had a decent distributor, I'd definitely take all of your advice and get the kit above. I think it's probably just easier to get it sorted for good? Better start saving my pennies now.

we took sooty to tommy and hes great.....is the price including tuning? Yeah, I've got no complaints with him. He stuck the purple one on the rolling road and tuned her up beautifully a couple of months back so I'm not getting her tuned again. He said the distributor is gonna cost around 160 quid and he'll charge a fiver to fit it. Or a tenner if he burns his hands!! Haha. Cant say fairer than that. Fingers crossed it sorts it out.

He said he saw you Lawson! I was in work at the time, or else I'd be chief tea maker and spanner fetcher! He just had a little fettle with it yesterday, changed the points and condenser yet again so that I can at least drive it short distances before she goes in to the garage. Took three of us to Cardiff last night no problem at all, contrary little thing!!
