for the past week ive been thinking 'hm, strong smell of petrol coming from the drive' but figured it was my dads mini...Plus ive been busy with uni stuff and i only use her on a thursday really during term time to go to work.. today i got in my mini to go to wrok (first time ive used it since last thursday) and i almost gassed myself... Inside there was probably more petrol fumes i the air than oxygen... got a lift into work instead. got home. went to have a nose. looked under the car. didnt see anything except one little drip mark. sniffed it. yep. petrol. stuck my camera under the car and blindly took shots and the underside of where my petrol tank is looks quite...dark...and wet.. opend the boot. smelt fresh as a daisy. went into the car and theres a massive patch of petrol on my rear seat base (after removing the seat) where is it coming from? how can i fix it? Something like this always happens when im getting excited for a show. or if i plan on tarting her up with something soo (ie. tomorrow was going to be the begin of operation engine bay) Minis arnt as great as their cracked up to be sometimes...

Hmmm. First off.>> do you park Roxie on a slope, and if so is it parked nose up or nose down. I take it the Mini is a carb type and not injection. If that's the case it sounds like the flexi hose on the tank outlet has sprung a leak.

that was my dads first thought aswell.
its carb. its parked on a slope nose down. my dad thinks whats happened is my fuel hose is leaking, its spilled fuel all over the boot. the fumes vaporised into the car through the parcel shelf which is why it smells fine, and because its nose down the fuel ran to the rear bulkhead, pooled then leaked through a seatbelt mount or something onto the bak seats.... lovely...
my dad said hes got some fuel line here. will that do? or will i need special flexi hose? also can someone make a dummies guide on how to remove the tank? ive never done it before and my dads in work tomorrow. also while the tanks out woud it be safe for me to flush it out? with water or something?(the taks almost empty now probably so it means i could remove any gunk thats in there....if theres any in there.)

The tank is fairly simple to take out. First You'll have to drain out what fuel is left by jacking the back of the car up. Use axle stands please. Undo the flexi hose where it joins the fuel pipe and have a container ready to catch the fuel when you pull the flexi hose off the pipe. Inside the boot take the wires off the fuel sender and locate the bolt which holds the tank strap on.. Should be, back left hand side of the tank. The next part could be awkward but needs to be done. Try to undo the clip which holds the tank end of the flexi hose and take the hose off. Unless the tank has been taken out recetly you may have to unstick the strap and move it away from the tank. Take off the breather pipe from the top of the tank and it should now be ready to take out. The tank will need to be pulled out from the bottom first otherwise the filler neck will jam. You may have to give it a fair tug to get it free. Personally, I'd swill the tank out with some petrol. Check the underside of the tank for any rust, just in case. They have been known to rust from inside out. The petrol hose should be ok as a temporary fix, but make sure where it goes through the boot floor that it you use a rubber grommet. Best of luck.

When I had mine out late last summer (my hose had sprung a leak too), my fuel hose was in the larger hole without a grommet (it has an smooth/angled centre).
Whilst the fuel tank vent pipe was positioned through the smaller hole with a grommet.
You may find a rubber collar attached to the fuel pipe and this should be positioned just beneath the boot floor, so that when the tank is removed it helps stop the hose being snagged off the main fuel pipe.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice! my dad did the bulk of the work because im a bit tender this morning after celebratory drinking after finishing my 3nd year in uni lol.
for those who want to strip off their soundproofing to save weight... i can say that leaving some petrol on it for a few days makes it a wipe away process!

i agree.... also keep the doors open, and windows, and boot....maybe invest in an industrial fan..... I got a raging headache from the fumes!

yep, was just the pipe. the boke in the bodyshop must have put the pipe in th wrong hole (after drilling the smaller hole out bigger) and just put the knackered grommet back on it. 2 lovely spits on it. all fixed now! and my oil gallery tappet chest cover seal things have been sorted now aswell! ;D
