how to wire a voltmeter?

can anyone remember how to wire in a volt meter...ive got one in my dash but never wired one up before....got the earth sorted but where does the red un go???

The red un should go to an ignition controlled +ive supply.
Thats a supply that is only 12V when the ignition is on.

There might be another 2 wires, red and black as well going to the meter lighting, the black un is another earth and can be connected to the black un from the meter and the red un is to be connecter to a sidelight supply (only 12v when the sidelights are on)

ive got the lighting sorted but lack of bulb means no light yet...

will get to it tomorrow and hopefully it will work

Sorry Phil, never go by colours, use a test multimeter to measure 12v or a test lamp works just as well ;D
