Both myself and Biker independently tried setting up like this a number of times on my Mini, using Mr Haynes and we both got it 180* out!!!!! so its very easy to get wrong !!!
The really annoying thing was that neither of us could see where we were going wrong with Mr Haynes!!!!!
A set of instructions or guide like Dai has done here would have helped no end and saved my battery charger a lot of wear and tear!!!
I will try and get some pics of the timing marks from mine to clarify the difference for later model Mini owners

thats a good one except on the later minis the you have no timing marks on the flywheel housing there on the crankshaft pulley I was just thinking the same thing as I was reading it. So I rock the car in gear until the slot on the pulley lines up with the largest of the spikes on the timing chain cover and inlet valve 1 should be rocking and I'll have TDC? Just ignore pic 1 & 2. Nice one dai leg'end!

Right, the weather finally broke for long enough that I could have a look. Thoroughly looked at the manual and went through this thread a few times so that I knew what I was working with. I've rocked the car in gear so that the notch in the pulley lined up with the largest of the spikes on the timing chain cover. So far so good? Took the rocker cover off and there's no rock at cylinder 1, so rocked the car again til I got TDC. Looking at Dai's pic, the engine is different but I get the just of things. Only problem is that 4 of the rockers are rocking not just the inlet of cylinder 1. Not sure if this is supposed to happen? And a look down the dizzy drive shaft.... I'm gonna pull the handbrake up and leave it until someone can confirm this is ok or inform me of what I need to do next, before I take the dizzy drive out.

Hats off to you M2F for going out in this cack weather to try and sort the timing issue. The way I see it is that if I'm out in the elements with him then he'll work for me (wishful thinking perhaps!) Will I be able to determine this myself? So whats the procedure for sorting this out? No wonder the poor bugger didnt want to start
