Sounds like a bad earth m8. Could be relying on an alternative earth path when something else gets used. Maybe the RC is using the clock illumination earth for a return path. Check all your earths. A new one on me that is.

Believe it or not a faulty/shorting wiper motor park-switch can cause your rev counter to fail.
The park-switch (wipers) runs on the same circuit and it can also cause the main fuse to blow or the wiring to melt if your really unlucky.
So if your wipers don't park themselves any more, then chances are it's the park-switch that is to blame here.

Why, because of a dodgy fuse box? Mine is 18 years old and I'm not having any problems as I replaced my fuse box last Winter and boy did that make a difference. The rear contacts on the main fuse box gets very rusty with age, so when fitting the new replacement, give it a coating of Vaseline first so it doesn't rust out any time soon. Don't use Copper Grease though, as that may create a short. There, now would you have this level of support with a different car? Plus a new fuse box costs around 20 quid that's all. Hardly breaking the bank now is it?

Oh and unless it's an injection model, the rev counter wire is black/white (I believe?) on the coil.
So check that's connected properly too.
