Has the earth lead you've found got a connector on the free end.?? If so there should be an earth wire coming out of the heater. They usually exit through the top of the heater casing. So get on your back and drop the heater.

Well the Somerford pdf page shows the 1992-96 heater as being very similar to what went before: - www.somerford-mini.co.uk/pdfs/Catalogues/Cooling-and-Heating-Systems/08.%20Heating%20-%20Fresh%20Air%20Heater%20Units%201969%20On.pdfSo there should be wires attached at the top of the unit, one being a bullet type connector. Plus there's the spade connector on the switch panel at the front? I once stripped down the heater unit that was fitted to my sisters old 1992 BOC LE Mini and that had the same type heater, but it wasn't that much different to the unit fitted to my 1990 Mini. It's just the matrix pipes are different and I think you can actually slide that matrix in and out without having to strip apart the heater unit. I can't do that with my heater, but that was about the only difference really.
