Im fitting hi los, new knuckles, tie bars and track rods in the next week or two, so at the same time thought id replace the cones with some uprated ones (probs the mini spares versions). But what i need to know is can you do it without compressing the cone? I do have the tool for it but the thread has gone in the cone so it doesnt work. Any tips? Cheers Dave.

Hmmm Weird one that. There are 2 types of thread on the cones and cone compressors. What year is the Mini.?? The early up to 76 had a fine thread and from 76 on the thread changed to a course metric thread..

Its a 96 mpi mini so its metric (ive got a metric only compressor) but it just wont go, it was actually damaging the thread on the tool. Is it possible to just remove the upper arm or is that a bit risky?

Not good. I wonder if a previous owner tried to change the donuts before, using the wrong threaded tool. (UNF) The amount of pressure on the top arm is immense mind you and if your hands are anywhere near that area when the cone decides to Free itself, for want of a better phrase, a lot of damage could be done. If the thread is known it is possible to tap a new thread on the donut.

it may be worth trying to get hold of a unf tool as when i done mine recently i found out i had one of each thread. i also did end up taking the top arm out with out the tool but like dai say extreme caution and not really advisable but if you do watch those hand and fingers cause when they go they GO

From memory you could get it out by removing the bottom arm, but dont take my word for it! i managed to get my cones out without removing the bottom arms.it took a fair bit of screw driver work and plenty of swearing but they did come out,but i dont recomend trying to put new ones in that way, haha ;DDEAN

Ok thanks for the advice could be that its a different thread as a fair bit of work has been done that im unaware of, but basically sounds like i need to get it to compress one way or another as ill damage myself otherwise... Well some more stuff will be coming next week so will give it another go see if i have any luck as am working over the weekend.
