legally your not allowed to have any tread showing when you view the wheel from above, so 5" wide maybe 5.5 is the limit with standard arches. also it doesn't really come under the MOT but if you have a picky tester they can make things harder for you. Its the police you want to watch out for as you can have a fresh MOT with sticking out wheels but they will still give you 3 points per wheel, which means your license is gone in one go.

i got the 5.5" 13s on my mini with the woodandpicket style arches wich i think are pretty much the same width as the standard ones and mine dont stick out (well may be a couple of mm) and mine recently gone through mot no problem i do seem to remember there being a limit as to how much your tyre was allowed to stick out without having to fit larger arches.

W&P are wider not by much (1/4 posibly 1/2" )but they are wider. as i said its not a problem for the MOT its the police who take objection to it.
the rules used to be you could have 1/2" of tread showing but that changed recently and now your not allowed any tread to show. you can have the bulge of the tyre wall stick out but thats as much as they allow

Why not put wider arches on to match the wheels? Or does that defeat the object? Also, I'm sure I have seen cars with tyres wider than arches - modded cars that have been dropped, got dolly body kits and pointless back boxes on them - Like Nova's!! You know the ones? Of course you do.
If they can pass an MOT, sure my mini shell could!

My MOT station always argues with me about this. According to them VOSA have issued them with new guidlines that no part of the wheel or tyre may protrude outside of the bodywork (MOT failure). I always tell them them that I could quite easily go home change the wheels to standard steels and take it back for MOT, and then replace them when I get the car back home, that soon shuts them up.
