when setting them make sure it a slack thou setting as i done a very tight thou setting + had all that trouble with emmissions for m.o.t + was due to me setting it very tight + very little slackness in between with feeler guage. hydro carbens were to high through it being too tight when it went on emmission test even though engine was running fine. hope that makes sense. some people say 15 thou + some 12 thou, we had probs when set at 15 thou so changed to slack 12 thou + went through emmissions fine after we alterd after talking to tommy in rolling road place

It really is as easy as it sounds, even if your not very confident with the spanners, just take your time.

have had to put this on the back burner, wrestled to get it all in for tomorrow, ran it to warm up (make sure theres no air in the cooling system). and it sounded alright. dad left to go and watch the match. the revs were slowly backing off (i thought due to it not being up to temp) opened the door, gave it a little blip to see if it would pick back up... there was a pop from the exhaust and Black smoke... and now has a miss....
i guess saint davids is off, and i think ive broken my toe from kicking the tyre so hard....
peoples thoughts as to the problem?

Well black smoke suggests too much fuel so maybe something as simple as a furked plug or as serious as a holed piston. Take the plugs out first thing tomorrow and check if you have compression, if it is serious you will know just by blocking the plug hole with your finger and spinning the engine over and you can check the plugs the same time.

Ill see what i can check now. would head gasket do it? or piston ring or something? ill see if i can find my dads compression do-daa and see what it says.

What was wrong with it? Headgasket usualy gives you steam out of the exhaust via water in cylinders, or blue smoke with oil contamination, or if a cylinder bore has broken it will sound like a bag of spanners. Piston faliure would again give oil contamination, giving blue smoke. An exhaust pop and black smoke would indicate ignition problem as black smoke is usualy due to waaaayyy overfueling and as you havnt touched your fueling system I assume there is no combustion and so unburnt fuel.

turns out i had damaged the silver bit on the top of one of the sparkplugs, changed that plug over and it was fine for around 5mins or so then awful again. turns out it was almost literally drowning in fuel, we leaned t off with the mixture screw and a colour tune and shes happy again now ;D dont know how she randomly started throwing fuel everywhere but its sorted now anyway
