Hi guys, just wondering if anyone could help with a couple of quick questions about getting my Mini roadworthy for the summer.
I have a 1982 998 mini currently parked at my Mamgu's in Llantrisant. No MOT and looks like it will need some welding doing before I get one. Hopefully won't need new sills but there's a nasty looking bit of corrosion underneath the passanger footwell next to the sill. Can anyone recommend somewhere local that can do the work for me? My welding skills are fairly laughable.
Also needs a new exhaust putting on, I bought a 2inch system cheap on Ebay (not ideal for a 998, I know). The engine still has the standard manifold but is there an adapter I can get to save me getting an LCB?
Another problem, maybe a biggy, the last time I drove the car back in the Autumn I couldn't change down. It made the 3 hour drive down the A470 very interesting indeed... Last time I started the car up I couldn't even get it into gear. Does this mean the clutch needs bleeding?
Oh, and just a quick one, do I have to have sidelights for the MOT?
Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi Huw. I'll start with the easy ones. Yes. Sidelights required for the MOT. Clutch. Was the clutch pedal going to the floor when you were unable to change gear.? If so, try bleeding the system first and if that dosn't cure things maybe the seals have gone in the clutch master cylinder. Yes, you can get the adaptor to fit the larger bore exhausts. As for the welding i don't know the area very well. Maybe someone else on here could help you with that one. Good luck.

for the clutch if the bleeding doesn't hold out for long check the seals of the slave cylinder before messing with the master as i understand its quite an irritating job and best left as a 'in case of emergencies' job.

ye most likely slave they are stupidly common as ive found. nice and easy to change on the plus side, cut the hose to the slave, undo fitting on master cylinder and buy the braided slave flexi hose. change slave cylinder and hose and you will have a wicked pedal.

Thanks for the response guys!
Yes, the clutch pedal was going all the way to the floor when I tried to change gear. I'll take a look at the Haynes manual and see about doing the clutch slave then. And luckily one of my neighbors gave me some halogen headlight assemblies with sidelights before they moved house so I'll get those plumbed in too.
Any more ideas about welders, ideally between Bridgend and Ponty?

hi mate check behind the seal on the slave if its wet its better to just change the slave. if its dry just bleed as you would brakes. have you checked if you have got fluid in there? could have leaky master cylinder. check both areas for suspicious fluid.

Okay, a bit of an update with how things have gone..
Bled the clutch, easy. Changed the HT leads, done. Changed the spark plugs, took about a week, broke a couple of spanners doing it. Put in the sidelights, would have been easy if Halfords had given me the right ones. 'Sorted' some rust around the sills, nothing too bad, just filed it away and filled it. There's definately some welding needs doing but don't think new sills will be needed.
Ok, problems...
One of the rear drums was jammedm totally rusted shut but sorted this with some WD40 and a few whacks with a hammer. Also, the car's up on ramps cos I've been looking at the wires for the reversing lights. There's two wired going in to the bottom of the gear stick housing but one is clearly snapped off and I cant tell where it goes. I'll take a look at that later..
The exhaust still needs to go on but I'll be needing some adapter for the manifold or the downpipe to take it from standard broe up to 2". Any ideas?
The other problem is that the rear brake adjusters seem to be snapped off. I've heard this can happen but I hadn't noticed it before. Can anything be done? It needs new pads so the drum will have to come apart anyway.
Thanks.
