As LJ stated, so long as the standard system is in good order you should be OK. The problem of overheating usually starts with a lot of stop - start driving and being stuck in queues with no airflow going through the grille.. Leccy fans will alleviate that problem and that's why they were fitted as standard to the later models. Good luck on The Run.

Yes the air flows through the grille, gets sucked in and pushed through the radiator and then forced out through the grille slats in the inner wing. 998cc engined Minis usually don't have a problem with overheating quite as much as the bigger engined variants. Here's a snap of my inner wing that got taken several years back when my Mini was receiving a much needed face lift: - As you can see, it has the standard early type of auxiliary electric cooling fan that is activated by a thermostat switch and only works when the water temperature rises significantly. So that's really only whilst being stuck in gridlocked traffic jams for a considerable length of time during the hottest times of the year. I think in the 15 years of owning my Mini Cooper, even when it was relatively new, I've probably only heard that electric fan work (as needed) about a dozen or so times. But it's obviously been needed as the 1275cc engines do have a habit of overheating in traffic, especially as they run on unleaded fuel and run a lot hotter as a result? Anyway my 1990 Mainstream Mini Cooper (much like the rarer 1990 RSP Mini Cooper LE) got that type of bolted on electric auxiliary cooling fan (the RSP got a separate loom for that electric fan though, where as the Mainstream didn't) that helps suck the air out through the standard inner wing grille (the inner wing grille as fitted to all Minis) up to the introduction of the injection models (the Mini Cooper 1.3SPi being the first in October 1991). After that the SPi Minis (the non Cooper 1275cc engined types arrived some time in 1992) all got a much larger inner wing cut-out with a larger built in electric auxiliary cooling fan that ran via spade terminals connected to the temp sender at the base of the radiator. Anyway my type of electric fan doesn't seem to be available any more, but there is this excellent Kenlowe type that will do the same job just as well I'm sure: - www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp?sg=&pgCode=&sgName=&pgName=&agCode=&agName=&pCode=080.246MINI
