Oh and I sometimes post messages on 'The Doctor Who Forum' and I attracted the attention of a BINI owner there too.

He tried to say that the old Mini was like Jon Pertwee and the BINI was like Tom Baker. i.e. a natural progression.

So I pointed out the fact that Jon Pertwee didn't play the role of the 3rd Doctor for over 41 years and neither did he win the Monte Carlo Rally 4 times either.

Quite a silly comparison to make anyway, although it's just the sort of thing a BINI owner would say. He even asked about meeting up at a Mini Show, yes like that's going to happen. lol

'm guilty of buying all the Doctor Who DVD's, except for the 'Davros boxset' as I really didn't want to buy all those DVD's again just to have a fixed Remembrance disc.

But I don't collect 'Torchwood' or the 'SJA' because I have to draw a line somewhere, plus I don't have a massive amount of money either since I have 3 wonderful kiddies, a mortgage and a 1990 Mini Cooper that demands attention now and again too.

And what better way to spend money than on a Mini! I know you're less enthusiastic about the New Mini than I am (I own one after all) but do you go to any shows? Should we start a Mini thread of Mini owners on OG?

He knows I'm less than enthusiastic about the BINI as my Mini website is advertised in my signature there too.

I've been pretty active in the Mini scene since late 1986 and I went to Mini 30, 35 & 40 @ Silverstone.

Oh and last year me, my misses and 2 kids (plus another one on the way who was then born last September) attended the 'London To Brighton Mini Run' for the first time ever. Quite a feat really considering we had to travel all the way from sunny South Wales up the M4 to London.

But we spent the night in the Heston Travelodge prior to the run and after being stuck in all the 'Italian Job' like traffic trying to get out of Brighton on our way home, we really wished we'd stopped another night.

We've also been to Hampshire many times over the years and attended the Mini Cooper Register day @ the Beaulieu Motor Museum. We'd usually make it a long weekend and camp overnight in the Hollands Wood campsite (situated between Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst), although now we have 3 kiddies, our Mini camping days are sadly over: -



I doubt we'll make many shows this year since we have a new baby girl, but I should be at the Mini World Action Day @ Castle Combe with my local Mini Club since it's not far away (even though we have to pay the horrendous toll fee for the Severn Bridge).

I've been a Mini-nut since I was a child; a combination of Scalextric and watching Mini/Escort rallycross duels on World of Sport! I finally got myself a Mini in 2003; the new version suits me best as I'm no mechanic and can't live without my luxuries!

I know most 'new' Mini's are owned by civilians but those of us that take them to shows and runs are passionate about the car, the brand, the history and in upgrading and modifying our cars. It's not a replacment, but a sucessor; in the same way that Baker replaced Pertwee!

I love my Mini and can't ever imagine driving anything else, but the 'classic' is the car I fell in love with.

I'm on the committee of the Portsmouth and Southampton Owners Club. The chairman Colin French and I also have a news and features blog at: www.miniminimini.com

I will be at Beaulieu this year for the fifth year running and also at L2B and Castle Coombe. Maybe we can catch up for a chin-wag!

Well that's all find and dandy, but how can anything bigger be truly called a Mini?

Plus my 18 year old Mini Cooper has done well in excess of 99,000 miles and is a very comfy little car. I use it far more than the family MPV and believe it or not I'm not having to fix it every weekend, although I do save a few pennies by servicing it every 6 months myself.







Oh and I recently gave a mate a lift in mine and it was the first time he'd ever been in a real Mini in his life. After a few minutes of us belting around bends and roundabouts whilst leaving everything else standing, he demanded to know why everyone else wasn't driving a real Mini as it was the best fun he'd had in ages.

So I had to regretfully point out the fact that many years ago, most people did drive around in them, but the British motor corporation is now long gone.

So after all these years, it's still going strong and running like a dream. Plus I'd just die of boredom if I had to drive about in anything else.

So I don't think using Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker as a way of representing the real Mini and the BMW BINI is a true comparison myself?

All this Mini talk reminds me of my first car - a 1971 teale blue Mini 1000 . Used to travel 170 miles to Aberdeen to University every term in it . I'm 6ft 4 inches tall and people always used to be surprised at the fact that I drove a Mini . My mum had a 1975 model 1000 when it was new and 5 people and a black lab travelled to carlisle in it quite regularly from the Eastern Scottish Borders . Oh happy days......

And by the way I usually buy all the Classic series DVDs and new series box sets but very few spin-offs. Get them shipped from Amazon if I really like them or wait for them to be released here in Oz and get reduced....

Yes classic Minis rock and my first Mini (which I passed my driving test in back in 1985) was a 1975 Tahiti Blue Mini 1000 and I really wish I'd kept it now.

But it's not the first time I've encountered a BINI owning fan on that forum. Oh well you can't win them all I guess.

Thanks, yes it was taken at the 'Hollands Wood' campsite in the New Forest a few years back for the Mini Cooper Day @ the Beaulieu motor museuam.

Oh and we were still unpacking at that point (you can see my daughter pegging up the tents internal sleeping areas) and we hadn't even got the picnic table or BBQ out yet.
