Well after lots of umming and arring I've decided to take the bull by the horns and Do It Myself , bought the paint, primer, laquear and sundries plus new paint gun, I figured that if I can buy all that for half the price got to be worth a go. Been about 13 years since I last sprayed a Mini but that one was OK so here goes. At the mo she is BRG but not for long, planning for next weekend, Friday night start and finish by Sunday with luck. I'll post the pics and horror stories after the mid life crisis event. Gonna be emotional. Pics of the new arrival will be online soon aswell hopefully.

Well worth doing it yourself mate, any faults can be sorted in your own time , Have you decided what type of paint you are going to use? I would recomend 2-pack but just make sure you get yourself a decent mask

yes mate, all 2k and got my army respirator for spraying, I like two pack cos you can flat it back and polish it, a bit more forgiving.

Lets just say that its not the normal mini shade, its nothing special like flip paint. I'm happy with the choice.

SHOULD HAVE GONE TO L2B Disaster struck with the basecoat, had a reaction in a few places and paint blistered, a bit confused now, was it because my primer coat was too thin in those areas as it was coincidence that they were the areas that had been flatted more than the rest? One patch was like crazy paving . Won't give up though, barrier coat of some description me thinks. Was going so well. I must have been bad in a previous life or maybe the heated discussion incident with a Taxi driver is the cause Will soldier on.

you can buy a neutraliser i believe from paint shop as can have a reaction due to too many coats of paint, if it just a small patch i have manage to apply undercoat + then add heat to the painted area straight away with a large type halogen lamp as this speeds up drying time which i learnt from of internet. byron

basically apply paint 1 hand + heat in other straight away + 9-10 times does work aslong as it only small areas where primer needs to be applied

Well I've heard that the L2BR was a bit wet this year and there were terrible traffic jams at both the London end and at Brighton. Quite a few enthusiasts are unhappy that they didn't get to leave Crystal Palace until well after 12.30pm due to the organisers causing more mayhem by trying to break the world record for the number of Minis in a convoy. Plus the rubber speed humps caused even more anger, even though parts of it were later removed so the Minis didn't get damaged. Oh and does anyone have any news on Irish and Phil? I've heard there were lots of stricken Minis and lost souls at the side of the road on the way to Brighton. To be honest when we went last year, our mate (who's taken part loads of times) had us park outside Crystal Palace to beat the traffic jam and then we took an alternative route (the long way around) to beat the traffic entering Brighton. But we did enjoy the day, even though it's highly unlikely that we'll ever do it again.

Well what can I say, drama with paint reaction but with a bit of hard work and new Barcoat the car was ready for the base coat. Well 4 coats went on quite well with no runs and pretty flat, not bad I thought considering my experience. Now then, top tip, always wipe the final base coat with a tack rag as when you put the first lacquer coat on it all shows up so i decided to accept the fact that there will be some dust in the finish which I can flat out later but when I put the second coat of lacquer on all the late entrants for the London Marathon turned up and out came the runs Still, I've left them on on to bake overnight and will flat and polish them out later. I will post pictures when back together.
