Hey stop picking on me. Well okay then, Issigonis didn't believe in music in cars and so there was no real provision for a radio in the Mini. But there were loads of ashtrays as he was a heavy smoker. Plus the capacious MKI/MKII Mini door bins were designed so Issigonis had somewhere handy to keep his gin and tonics. Or officially several old style milk bottles.

Don't get me started Phil and I'm still biting my tongue after reading a few threads on the Mini Cooper Register forum about how the efficient Germans did such a wonderful job at Mini United. Mind you that got posted by the usual pro-BINI bore whose a member of practically all Mini forums. So everyone tends to ignore him and I'm going to do the same. Yes totally out of character for me though. Anyway there's loads of Mini facts on just about every page of my Mini rough guide history 1959-2000 website. ;D

The word 'mini' did not exist before the production of the mini.
After designing such a small car, Issigonis named it the 'mini' after his childhood friend Bernard Minihoff, who was only 5 foot.
This, subsequently lead to the word 'mini' being used to describe small, and was first included in the 1963 edition of the Oxford English dictionary.

The Mini has won many awards over the years, perhaps the most notable include: "Car of the Century" (Autocar magazine 1995), "Number One Classic Car of All Time" (Classic & Sports Car magazine 1996) and "European Car of the Century" in a worldwide Internet poll run by the prestigious Global Automotive Elections Foundation in 1999. The Mini managed second place (behind the Model T Ford) for "Global Car of the Century" in that same poll.
In the end 5.3 million Minis were sold, making it by far the most popular British car ever made. Thousands of these are still on the road, with the remaining pre-1980s versions being firmly established as collectors' items.

Issigonis first designed a car with transverse engine and front wheel drive in 1952 and this was in a converted Morris Minor. The gearbox was on the end of the engine rather than in the sump.

The leaky floors in the early Minis was Issigonis's fault. He was so bloody minded he wouldn't change the way they were put together on the assembly line even after his production team had alerted him to the problem. He eventually had to give in and the assembly method was changed.

A total of 3016 Nuts bolts and screws were used to hold the early Minis together.

Official sellers of the first run of mini's were told to drill holes in the roof channel to allow water out until the factory could resolve this flaw.
