Well after a month of not owning a Mini I finally got around to getting another one, and not before time! I picked it up in Treforest yesterday and managed to get it to Llantrisant even though the needle, mix and idle weren't right. So I could check the mix with the Colortune I took out a plug and on of the leads.. And suddenly noticed the plug leads weren't in the right order. I thought all A series engines fired 1-3-4-2 (anticlockwise). Anyway, this morning I still couldn't get the right order so had to call the AA out. The guy agreed with me that we had the right firing order and we checked all ignition, all electrics, all fuel and everything. Just as we were about to give up I changed the wires around to 1-2-4-3 and it fired up! Neither of us could understand it... After changing the fan belt and setting the idle (but couldn't get at the mixture screw!) I set off home and got to Builth before there was smoke coming from the engine bay. I could see something was dripping onto the manifold (I thought it was fuel out of the carb) but kept on going to find somewhere to check it in Rhaeder. Turned out it was oil leaking out of the pressure guage pipe. I cut the pipe and put a bolt in, and went to set out onto the road again. I pressed the brake pedal and nothing happened, just straight ahead onto the road.. luckily I jammed on the handbrake just intime, which held on the last click. So once again the AA were called and I spent the last 30 miles home in a recover truck... Oh how I have missed the joys of Mini ownership..

Glad you're Mini-ing again, but Treforest is a local place for local people and there's nothing for you there. So it's lucky you were able to leave. ;D Oh and this is the correct firing order: -

Well it's possible that the dizzy is turned (advanced?) differently or something?

i think you mite find that the dizzy is out 180 if it started on 1.2.4.3 give that a try

That would mean it's only firing on two cylinders right? Which would explain why I had a top speed of 50mph, which I had previously put down to mixture and needle. I did think of that yesterday but discounted it as the lead for No.1 would not reach from the opposite side of the dizzy (where 4 is on the above diagram). Also, if I turned the dizzy upside down, the vacuum lead wouldn't reach. Now I'm thinking, if I take the dizzy out, twist the end of the shaft by 180, that could be the solution.. Is this making sense or am I being dull?

yes take dizzy out and turn 180, failing that and quite possibly overlooked, are your leads in good order, mite be worth buying or borrowing a set to try

Update - It works! I took the dizzy out and tried to put it back in with the shaft turned 180, but this doesn't work because the shaft isn't symmetrical! So, I turned the engine one turn and put the dizzy in (with leads in the correct order) and it jumped into life!
I should really put a thread in the Users Minis section, as since then I've had countless more problems that would make interesting reading...

Glad to hear you've got your Mini up and running. By all means post a thread about your other "problems". Any info like that is useful for all the members.
