How tricky is the starter motor to remove? Any more or less than the alternator? The piggyback type starter, ie the one on amys BOC. Since everything else is starting to look very shiney, I find myself in the predicament that with every added piece of bling, the thing that sits next to it looks rather shoddy! haha ;D

very easy diconect the battery first though, take front grill off to make access easier then just disconect the leads on the starter but remember where they go, then undo the retaining bolts and pull out,,, easy :-)

That straight forward? Just bolt out bolt in? No lining up of gears or anything? I guess my concern was that the thing would have to be lined up properly after taking it off, but is this not the case?

Good news, thats next on the list of things to paint on amys mini then lol ;D With all this bloody wet weather I dunno when the hell I'm gonna get a few dry days straight so I can prep, primer, mask and paint the servo without taking it out

and with the problems with your car i doubt there's time for mine went to start it earlier, that was fine, went to select a gear, but it WONT MOVE. hmmm RAC job lol
