the standard 55w halogen conversion will work fine with the standard wireing loom, sounds like you got a bad earth or a bad joint somewhere causing the current to increase.
what year is your mini? as the later ones (sort of mid 80's on) did have relays already fitted

should have a pink relay tucked up under the dash by the clocks then, first thing to do is to clean up all the earth's and connectors and fuse box

Mind you that's an orange relay. its a relay/resister combination. it partly lights the head light when the side lights are on, then is a relay for the head lights and for main beam not sure of an orange one, all the late 80's early 90s minis ive seen have a pink one

But looking on Mini Spares site and I'm sure mine looks just like this and it doesn't look pink to me?: - www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=33955&title=RELAY%20FOR%20DIP%20DIM%20CONTROL... I know I've got lousy eye sight (thanks to the onset of cataracts) though.

Mines a Pinky Orange.... hard to describe...
Taffy, I don't suppose you know how to...mess with... the dim/dip system to stop it working do you? Also a few websites say its the canister sort of resister and the air cooled resistor combo that's riveted to the inner wing behind the rad and others say its the pinky orange thing under the dash? I have both..... =/

Ive got angel eyes and the Dim/Dip RUINS it when your driving about...
talked to lawson about it up in malvern and he said i may have to bypass a few of the wires past the dim/dip relay etc. and it all seems a bit of a mystery...
dad looked at the wiring diagram and said If i disconnected the resistor in theory it will stop anything getting to the headlights to make them light up dimly...
went up my nans, popped the bonnet, unhooked the two sections of the resistor... hey presto... now i need a way to keep the moisture out of them (in case i want to switch back...like in the winter or something) and jobs a good un ;D ;D
