When I pulled into amys street earlier, I heard a rubbing type noise, but thought nothing of it, put it down to wheels rubbing (they do that sometimes on full right hand lock) The noise probably persisted but was drowned out by music, road noise etc also my suspension is crhonically squeaks at times, along with a snapped brake dust sheild which rattles. When I pulled up I stopped the engine and got out, 5 minutes later I came back and started up, put the clucth in fine, selected first no problems, but then as I set off it made really bad noise and wasnt moving much. So I stopped, rolled back, and tried 2nd, with the same noise. Now I'm not sure if the car will move off and drive ok because the noise was so bad that I didnt want to try. It sounds a bit like when you put 13x7's on a mini with un-cut arches and they make a scraping, rubbing noise. Any ideas?

Hard to say without actually hearing the noise myself Dan. The clutch sounds a bit suspect though.

I'm leaning towards the clutch more than the gearbox myself (mainly because it makes it easier not to have to think about paying for a gearbox rebuild) But I would be more suspect if the 'box had any previous problems, but its never been troublesome in the slightest, apart from a few clutch problems. And also it was a very sudden change from working to just not lol. No warning or anything. I really had to check the arches though, because it sounded JUST like rubbing wheels.

I'm hoping it's the clutch as well Dan. The gearbox, as you say usually gives a warning when things aren't right by whining or difficulty in changing gears.

It could be the clutch release bearing which has breathed it's last breath, but then again that usually gives a warning by squealing like a pig when you press the clutch in.

dad said It may be an engine mount sheered? meaning its dropped the engine onto the driveshaft? get amy to try and pull off in first, you walk along side the car holding the bonnet open, if you see the engine twist, or judder at all it could be that?

It's not something daft like the disc brake stone guard catching on the wheel/disc?
I binned both of mine years ago, because they make a horrible noise when the fixing brackets snap.

lol I empathize with you there taffy, mine are rattling all over the shop I did check the sheilds, and all around the hub/disc assembly and nothing was out of place. Also checked the subframe mounts by eye, because it did feel like something big was moving lol. But it turns out, when the RAC man finally showed up and we jacked it up, he could hold the nearside driveshaft and turn the wheel He reckoned since I had the bearings replaced that side a couple weeks ago, thet they were done wrong and one of them collapsed, taking out the splines on the driveshaft in the hub.

Oh yes, big sigh of relief, just so glad it happened when it did and not at the end of last week when we were on the motorway most of the day, going to bristol then alton towers then drayton mannor and then home, a total of over 650 miles, most of it at motorway pace Dont want to think about the consequences of the wheel coming off at that speed

Ouch. Not often that happens. With a bit of luck you only need a hub, bearings, CV joint and shaft. On second thought, more likely the CV end of the driveshaft pulled out, probably because the driveshaft clip wasn't fully seated in it's location groove. So you may only need a CV joint and a driveshaft, "with a NEW CLIP", hopefully.

yeah the garage SAY that the problem was that, but realistically would they have paid for the whole job to be done themselves if the KNEW they didnt cause the problem???
i bit suspect to me....
