hi all
Had a go at priming a door i am replacing today, firstly it was sanded down then any thing that needed filling was filled, this was then rubbed down, i then wiped it off with a dry cloth to remove any dust etc, then i primed it, i used a 500ml spray tin from halfords, and have used it all, although the finnish resembles sandpaper, its quite rough? is this right? or do i need to re sand it down and then spray again any help would be appreciated.
thanks Jamie

I not an expert on this but you need a smooth finish as far as I know what grade paper did you sand it down with before priming?

Use fine wet and dry mate. you use coarse if needed then medium then fine. try giving it a once over with fine paper see if you get better results and between coats I think you give it a little rub too Ainsley

Do you know if it was standard primer or the hi-build primer? halfords hi-build primer is like tar in a tin

280 is grit paper m8, you should be finishing with more like 800-1000 before painting and 1200-2000 for finishing colour coats and blocking down orange peel etc. Wrap your paper around a block as well or you'll introduce furrows in the paint from your fingers which will stand out in the final coat. Take your time, it's all in the preparation m8. You should also wipe the panel down with panel wipe and maybe a tack rag to lift all the crap off before paint.

It's all about practise Might be worth trying one of the aerosol guns they sell in halfords, you tend to get a more even spray then and makes it a lot easier, Well worth practising with the primer before putting on the top coat on.

Also dont just sweep your arm with the aerosol, try to keep the can parallel with the panel right to the end of your stroke, sort of if your arm is going left allow your wrist to bend right if you follow, This allows the gun or can to be level with the panel therefore there is no thin paint and just overspray at the end of your stroke and a heavy build up in the middle which may cause a run.
