Every time i brake hard-ish or drop down a gear the electrics trip off for a second. As in if the wipers/lights/radio are on they cut off when the car lurches forward even slightly. Cant find anything apparent with the wiring and its getting me concerned because it smelled like burning the first time it happened and the engine wouldnt turn over for about 2 minutes (whilst holding up traffic in the middle of swansea!!) I know it must be a wire somewhere but its not in the engine bay or the boot, also had a new battery not so long ago so thats not suspect. Any ideas guys ??

Hmmm. Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Check the battery terminals first then check to see if the main battery lead front to back has not worn through and is earthing somewhere on the chassis. Check the connections in the fuse box as well and make sure no fuses are loose.

I'd check the main earth leads, one being the negative side of the battery and of course the one attached via the top engine steady bar between the bulkhead and engine block. It won't hurt to add another earth lead between the engine and bulkhead just in case. Perhaps from a manifold stud to the bulkhead? Apart from that, if your Mini is an injection model, then the fuel cut-out switch may be playing up?

Well considering it only happens when the car is lurching makes me think that the engine rocking is setting it off.
The engine rocking tends to happen due to perished rubber bushes on the top engine steady and that's where the engine earth lead is situated.
So check it out.
Or it could be something to do with the main battery cable as Dai suggested, so check that's not earthing against the front subframe when the car lurches.
