Phil, please can you tell me what type of radiator cap have you got fitted on your (or Corina's) Mainstream Mini Cooper? The reason I ask is because when I did a full service on mine, I also replaced the radiator cap too and I got it from Mini Spares. Going by the blurb on their website I assumed this was the one I needed: - www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=38048&title=RAD%20CAP%2015LB%201980-92,EXCE Okay that was at the end of June and due to the bad weather and me wanting to sort my Mini out for the MOT, I've only done 18 miles since fitting that cap. However I noticed the coolant level dropping to below the metal clip marker thing inside the filler neck. It's never done that before and so I then compared the new cap to my old one (I'd hung on to it just in case) and my old cap has a rubber seal which means it seals against the mouth of the filler neck, but the new cap doesn't have that seal. Anyway I asked around and this is the reply I got on the Mini Cooper Register forum: - So it looks like I need this cap instead then: - www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=35953&title=RAD%20CAP%20WHEN%20EXPANSION%20TAThe blurb is really confusing and unclear and even Somerford Minis are making the same mistake here. They always seem to forget there was a 1990/91 carb Mini Cooper prior to the fuel injected cars. So I just wondered if your radiator cap has a rubber seal fitted at the back which comes in contact the with mouth of the filler neck when fitted?

Oh and even though I've only done 18 miles with this radiator cap fitted, I guess the fact I've had this part since the end of June means I won't get an exchange now? Not that it costs the earth anyway.

Yes mate it has the rubber seal, stamped KTP 9217 15lb Brilliant, thanks Phil and that's what was stamped on my old radiator cap that had the extra seal. Looks like I'll definitely be wanting a new radiator cap now then.

Yes just send me the bill because I'm very grateful anyway. ;D Mind you when we were on our hols I did pop into Halfords in Haverfordwest and they were far more helpful than my local branch. They even had flexible grease gun attachments too, so their not the holy grail or a non-entity that my local branch claimed then. Anyway they didn't have the radiator cap with the seal either, but they did recommend a local car parts specialists just up the road. They didn't have one either but they were also very helpful and quite chatty and mentioned the Pembrokeshire classic car run (shame we're home now though). Still at least Moss is providing the correct part information: - www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=3475

Just a quick update and today I telephoned Mini Spares and the bloke (Alex) was trying to say it was my fault for ordering the wrong part. For a few poxy quid I was all for just giving up, but as Marie was in close proximity and she threw a wobbly I then decided to argue the toss. I pointed out how I'd simply rung up and asked for a replacement radiator cap for my 1990 Mini Cooper and how they'd sent me the wrong part. He kept going on about how that cap had now been used and so they couldn't accept it back and issue a refund and going by their information I'd been given the correct item anyway. In the end I think I got through to Alex as I pointed out how their information is wrong and as such their supplying the wrong part. So he agreed to send the other type of radiator cap with the seal free of charge. But after another earful off Marie I ended up ringing back and asking to speak to Simon the boss (who hangs out on The Mini Forum). Anyway he didn't seem that bothered even though he knew I'd been having a moan on The Mini Forum because I'd sent him a PM. He just said he'd look into it and send me a PM in return. Well he hasn't and so I don't think they care? Okay it's not the end of the world and it's only a cheap part, but it could have made a big difference if all my coolant had escaped during a long run. So I'm none too happy with Mini Spares at the moment and if anyone needs a radiator cap for a post 1976 Mini 1000, then let me know as I have one that's nearly brand new.

But if Mini enthusiasts (MCR members) have this kind of information to hand: - Then why can't the Mini specialists get it right?

Okay so apologies to Simon of Mini Spares as I jumped the gun a little and I received a PM today telling me how he's made enquiries with both Unipart and X-Part (Rovers new parts name) and so the website information will be updated and I'll be getting a replacement cap free of charge. So top result in the end then and thanks again Phil for confirming things. ;D

It arrived this morning and here it is folks: - Complete with that pesky seal: - And I did get it for free as they took the money and then refunded it today. Plus I've still got the post 1976 998cc type too. 2 radiator caps for the price of one, am I being jammy or what? ;D
