DVLA figures published in July 2009 state that there are 55,318 Classic Minis left on UK roads with 34,095 on SORN. Only5.66% of all Minis sold in the UK remain. 31,862 Minis have been scrapped or gone missing since 2002. Shocking isn't it.

I dunno, Britain just won't be the same without the sight of real Minis and the whine of the good old faithful A series engine & gearbox. I'm also old enough to remember when Minis were everywhere and even as a little kid I knew a MK1 from a Mk2 or Mk3. Plus I knew all about the Elf and Hornet and the Clubman range. But I had no idea what the significance of the Mini Cooper was as I'd only ever spotted a red/black MK1 Austin Cooper parked next to the old Midland Bank (remember them) in Treorchy and it wasn't until years later I found out what a motorsport legend it was. Anyway considering our lousy climate and the amount of salt that gets put on the roads every Winter, it's still amazing that there are over 55,000 Minis still running. I'd imagine there's probably a hell of a lot more lying about in garages, lock-ups and barns awaiting restoration as they got taken off the road prior to the SORN system being introduced? So there's no way of telling just how many have fallen through the net?
