could be tappets getting noisy? tickety tickety tickety tickety tickety tickety sort of noise? will only cost you £1 to check your tappet clearances (if you have a set of feeler guages to hand) to get a new rocker gasket...

do you have a breather coming out from the block near the water pump? if the pipe on this has a gash or hole in it it could make a sort of chuffing noise?

Has your Mini got an electric auxiliary cooling fan mounted in the inner wing, right next to the normal side mounted radiator? Perhaps the fault has something to do with that? Well, just a thought anyway.

Have you thought about getting a louder exhaust to drown out the noise?

How about having your hearing damaged so you no longer hear the noise?

Louder exhaust ?? uuum is that even possible ? i have had many complaints about my noisyness around sandfields on the way to 6th form .... most recent one because i scared an old womans dog ;D she tried to make me feel bad and i have never felt so proud in my life hearing damage is coming along nicely too so best of bold worlds really still need to sort it out... need time as im working all weekend and in 6th form all week Also do they break just as cambelts do or is it just a case of rattling is as bad as they get ? stupid question i know but i have never heard of a mini breaking a timing chain

I think it will go eventually my mate had a 998 and most of the teeth were stripped of the wheels because he ignored it, but I duno what period of time that happened over though. I think like with all things the sooner you do them the better. Are you going to replace it with a simplex or duplex or not decided yet? I was going to change mine but got told it was an engine out job, so though it could wait untill I destroyed another gearbox....

I've got duplex on the way may as well treat ol' george ... its nearly xmas after all. and theres an article in miniworld of how to do the duplex conversion on a 998 sounds relatively straight forward (Famous last words )

is pretty easy, replace bolts with countersunk ones (will have to countersink the end plate) hit the bulge in the timing cover with a hammer to stop it hitting chain, fit chain and tensioner - simples
