My temp guage takes around 20mins of driving to show anything like normal. but the temp of the blowers gets to the right temp within about 5mins. My twin clock set up used to be spot on, but all the tripple clock set ups ive seen are realllly sluggish. may be worth giving it a longish drive first...? Then again new temp sensors arnt much...

My temperature gauge never worked that well when I bought my Mini back in early 1994.
Then around 2001 I decided to fit a new temperature sender in the block and then for the first time the temp gauge actually red normal.
But not that long afterwards when my original coil packed in it sent my temp gauge haywire and it hasn't worked since.
I've tried the trick of shorting the temp sender spade terminal against the engine block with a paper clip, but my temp gauge still stubbornly refuses to move. If the gauge and wiring were working fine, then the gauge would have shot up to the red whilst being shorted.
There is a thread on The Mini Forum where a member with similar gauge problems fitted a tiny microcircuit to act as a voltage stabiliser and he got his gauges working again.
It took a bit of soldering and stripping down of the clocks. But these problems only seem to affect the Nippon Seiki instruments that got fitted to Minis from the mid 1980's. After around 1987 they didn't get replaceable voltage stabilisers like the Smiths Instruments of old.
So replacing of the gauges themselves (I don't know if a company like Speedy Cables of Swansea could repair them?) was therefore the answer.
But that bloke on The Mini Forum proved that even naff Nippon gauges can be repaired if you're handy with a soldering iron and the microcircuit only cost a few pence.
Apart from that I don't think you can easily get a 1275cc temp sender and most Mini specialist are now only supplying a 998cc type to cover all carb models.
The SPi Minis got the temp sender fitted in the inlet manifold (I believe?). But the MPi Twin-Point Minis got it fitted back on the cylinder head beneath the thermostat again.

Misses are never happy when they see their hubbies enjoying themselves. I'm sure she'll come around though once she's taken it for a spin.
